Steering Gear Box "Sloppy"

Hello everyone,
I've had a Sloppy Steering problem (80,000 miles) with my 1998 Blazer 2wd since I purchased it. I checked everything on this truck at least twenty times and found out it was a worn out piece of shit steering box. Now I am happy to report that I just replaced that worn out Steering Gear Box with a Re-manufactured box from Murrays Auto parts, and the truck steers like brand new. It responds to a half inch of turn on the steering wheel. I am no longer concerned about getting on the expressway any more. I can't belive I waited this long to replace it. You guy's should feel what your missing. I hope this helps someone........................

It took us just under two hours, from start to sweep.

What no pictures? Good to hear. The steering is on my To Do list but not till the wather gets warmer.

I did'nt even think about taking any pictures because it was such an easy job to do. I took my time cleaning everything off and wire brushing everything, and anti siezing all bolts, pumping out all of the old power steering fluid ......Thats why my job took a little longer to do... I'm willing to bet that 50% of all blazer steering slop is caused by bad steering box's, and the other 50% is intermediate shafts and front end parts gone bad. My old fluid looked like dark metalic paint while it was draining.
If your front end is tight and you want to test your steering box for slop, simply start your engine up, center your steering wheel, stand outside with the window down, SLOWLY turn your wheel to the left and see how far your wheel went before your tires moved. If you moved your steering wheel more then 1 inch and no movement from the tires, your box is bad.

About an hour to change a box... Disconnect the power steering lines (16mm) then use a picklefork to seperate the pitman arm from the center link, then 3 18mm bolts in the wheel well. To prime the system simply run your steering from lock to lock a few times..

These instructions are what I went on and they worked out perfectly...
