Keys stuck in ignition wont turn anywhere.

Heres a quick rundown. My keys are stuck in the ignition. the ignition wont turn and the steering wheel is locked. I think its stuck in ACC position. I have disconnected the battery and have tried rocking shaking and everything I can think of. Someone said something about a white peice under the ignition that needs to be unplugged or something? Please Help!!!!

What year?

You need the battery connected in order to turn switch to off.

It's a 99 and the battery was disconnected simply because it's stuck in accessory mode. Did'nt want to drain the battery.

Re: Keys stuck in ignition wont turn anywhere.

Not sure about the '99. My '97 has a small 2 wire plug that fits into the key tumbler assembly that allows the key to move to the off position so I can get the key out.
In order to get at it, you have to remove the cover on the steering column. On mine, the cover is held on by 2 screws (25 torx driver) in the bottom piece, then 2 more screws (M6 torx socket - or needle nose pliers) holding the top piece on.

Again, I'm not clear on the '99, on mine this connector is part of the ignition switch wiring harness. I got the harness from Autozone for $85.00.

Good luck.

Ha I could have used this when my battery died at a parking garage. i had to lock the car w/ the key in the igniton on my 97 blazer, When the cops came to slim jim my door they gave me a ticket for having tinted windows and again gave me shit for having clear corners even though they are amber. But now i know thanx mike

Re: Keys stuck in ignition wont turn anywhere.

I have a 97 and have had this happen to me before.

Ok, easy part first. You need to have the battery connected to have a chance at this first one. There is a solenoid in the sterring column directly underneath the lock cylinder. It needs to have power to engage or else it won't let you turn the key all the way back, but if you already had the battery connected and the key wouldn't come back then this isn't your problem. (Side note) A simple way to bypass this solenoid wihtout power is, if you look on the underside of the steering column there should be a little square of plastic that looks like it can be popped out, you can remove this and the solenoid is right behind it, you can push the shaft in and it will unlock the cylinder so you can turn the key without power.

However if this doesn't work I'm afraid you might have bigger problems. This happened to me once initially after I got my truck back from a transmission rebuild. I ,just like, you couldn't turn the key all the way back however I could get it back far enough so that none of the accessories were turned on. The problem turned out to be that the linkage from the gearshift wasn't adjusted correctly, so the car didn't know it was in park when it really was, therefore not allowing you to take the key out. Your linkage may have come lose. I however didn't have to adjust the linkage since the guy at the transmission place did it for free when I took it back, so I can't help you out with how to adjust it.

On a side note, the transmission functioned properly even though the linkage was adjusted correctly. If I was a betting man I would put money on the linkage being the problem as opposed to something in the steering column.

Make sure it is firmly in park.
