Droppin The Ol' Tranny

So basically, I am quite sure I need to replace the rear-main on my vehicle, which is a 98 Blazer 2wd. How would one go about such a task? Do I just take off the bellhousing bolts and work my way from there or what? Any tips would be GREATLY appreciated, especially if you have done this sort of thing before. Thanks a lot! By the way, it is an automatic

Re: Droppin The Ol' Tranny

I've never replaced the rear main, but if you are pulling the trans, do NOT remove the bell housing bolts until you are ready to drop the trans!!!!! That is usually the LAST thing I do. Remove the driveshaft, torque converter bolts, crossmember, wires/connections, drain fluid. It is difficult to pull the trans using just a floor jack, a trans jack is much preferred, but I have done it using a floor jack and a piece of plywood under the pan. It is hard to balance, go slow, if it starts to fall it is not going to stop, GET OUT OF THE WAY. Try not to tilt it forward, the torque converter will fall out and may damage the input shaft. Install is just putting everything back in, start with the bellhousing bolts. It is not really that hard of a job but those trannys are heavy, it helps to have an extra set of hands to help guide/hold things.

Re: Droppin The Ol' Tranny

also make sure the blazer is safe to get under, when you pop the u joint off the rear end and if you only have the front of the vehicle lifted it may roll back...I know on my s10 truck you also have to remove the exaust for clearance, also have to unbolt starter so make sure that battery is disconnected...take your time is the biggy...good luck
