Exclamation 96 Blazer Dead Battery All new

Hello,

I went to start my truck yesterday and the battery was dead jumped it with a quick starter and it fired right up and was geting about 15volts from the gauge, but it died again after I drove it about 10 miles shut the engine of for like 2 minutes and was dead so, I changed the battery and everything seem to be fine, but it died again while at work so I moved on to a new alternator and I thought everything was fine, but I just tried to go to a friends house and the damn things is dead again.. I checked all the cables on the battery and alternator and all is tight, but it is dead!!

What is the problem??

96 Blazer V6 4.3 Vortec 100k miles 2DR 2WD

Thanks!!

Try charging your battery up and leave it unhooked from the truck during the night. Hook it back up in the morning and see if still has a charge, if not its the battery. If it holds a charge there is a draw coming from somewhere within system

Check the battery voltage when the Blazer if off. Should be about 12.6 V. If you loose a cell it drops 2.1 V per. All auto stores will also do this for you and run a load test. Check that before you start a search for cables and shorts. In hot southern states heat kills batteries in 2-3 years.

A "Bad" starter will cause the battery to drain if its not dis-engaging from the bendix (i think). We had a old 72 Ford F600 box truck and it was eating batteries and alternators like crazy. Turned out the starter was leaving a circuit open all the time and draining the batt. good luck

Re: 96 Blazer Dead Battery All new

Start disconnecting parts, sounds like fun huh? I found I had a draw coming from my power seat and was killing my battery and yes I had a new batt and new 100amp Alt. I also see a major draw when I have the rear defroster on in the morning, when I stop I go down to 12 V.

Did you completely recharge the new battery before you hooked up the new alternator? If not, that could be your problem. The alternator won't charge right when connected to a partially dead battery.

Ok I unhooked the battery and charged it until my charger said full then I took the new battery to autozone they said it was fully charged so I hooked it back up and drove it to local mechainic he tested the alternator, battery and starter and said their all good. I thought everything was fine so I drove it home stopped at the video store was in there about 10 minutes came out and the battery was dead. I brought my tester with and it showed the battery as 0 volts dead! I unhooked all accessories, but something is eatting the battery all to hell!!!

Blazee,I charged the battery fully before installing..

Thanks, Rick

Exchange it for another battery.
Just because it's new, doesn't mean it can't take a dump.
(Who knows how long it sat on the shelf?)

The only other thing I would have guessed was a bad Cable (break somewhere in the cable itself). But with 0 volts, you either put the positive to the frame and toasted the battery (and everything else electrical in the truck), or you got numerous bad cells in the battery.

I'd also like to point out that half the time those testers that autozone/advance uses don't always read right. The fact that you charged the battery and it died after 10 minutes may mean it's not getting a charge. If you do replace the battery and it dies, more than likely the voltage regulator inside the alternator is bad.

Re: 96 Blazer Dead Battery All new

Alright I returned the battery for a new one and the truck seems to be keeping the charge... It's been 4hrs sense install and it started right up when I just went out there to test it. I'll let you know after work in the morning if it starts...

Thanks!!

With the car off, leave your headlights on for 10 mins. Any battery should be able to handle that and still start. If it doesn't it's not getting a charge...(dim lights at night will also show this) Good luck! I hope just the battery change solved your issue.
