Boost: a street racing story
Well, I’ve begun writing a novel/series about street racing/mountain drifting. I decided to post it here as a lot of time members of the story will get into “stop light grand prix” and I will also delve into the highway racing scene. This is the first half of the first section, a mountain race between a SupraTT and a S2K.
Boost
“GO!”
Corey dumped the clutch, slammed into first, and roared off into darkness
ahead of him. Trees resembled mere shadows in the darkness of Mt. Kukina,
but that didn’t matter. Corey knew these mountain roads like the back of his hand.
“There it is,” said Corey as the twin-turbos lodged into the 2JZGTE-TT finally kicked in.
The result was immediate; the Supra’s rpm’s skyrocketed to redline before he hammered his clutch and slammed the shifter into second. His actions were answered with a satisfying “clunk” as the Japanese super car, despite its weight, rocketed towards the first corner.
“Danny’s a thing of the past now,” Corey said to himself. J Just out of curiosity, he looked into his rear-view mirror only to see the headlights of his opponents Honda S200 not to far behind him.
“Close, eh? Not for long.”
***
Mark watched unfazed as Corey pulled ahead of the S2000. As expected, he had roared ahead easily. As the taillights of the two duelist disappeared beyond the horizon, he pressed a button on a walkie-talkie sitting in the bucket seat next to him. Al was expecting a check-in.
“Yo,” said a deep voice on the other end of the two-way.
“Corey’s in the lead. Pulled at least a car-length on him,” said Mark nonchalantly.
“As expected,” replied Alex.
“Later,” said Mark.
Mark put the walkie-talkie back down and started his engine; no-need to stay up here. A second run was impossible; Corey would end this battle in one.
***
Another peak in revs was answered by another “clunk” as the Supra now found its home in 3rd gear. Corey again momentarily fixed his glare in his rear-view; this was pleased to see the little Honda farther back. But then he quickly returned his eyes to the road, as the real race was about to begin. Mt. Kukina’s roads were wide but steep and twisty. There lied many passing opportunities throughout the run; the only problem was the widest corners were the sharpest and steepest. Straight-aways were frequent yet short, but still long enough to ensure most races came down to horsepower battles.
A caution sign whizzed by Corey’s window; the first corner was fast approaching.
“Time to party,” said Corey while grabbing hold of the shifter. The Supra redlined once more, and Corey shifted into 4th. He kept is hand on the shifter though, knowing he would need to quickly downshift shortly.
“NOW.”
Corey heel and toed down to 2nd gear while jerking the car right before feverishly rotating the steering wheel left. He kept the engine at redline while the Supra obeyed his command and weight shifted perfectly, allowing Corey to use all of its weight as momentum into the corner. The wheels began to spin slightly before Corey began to unravel the wheel. The Supra began to straighten out while Corey grabbed the shifter once more. Knocking it up to 3rd he kept his foot to the accelerator and entered a straight.
“One down.”
***
Michael smiled at the site of the big blue Supra gliding through the corner and powering down to the next one. Corey started out perfectly. But Daniel and the S2000 wasn’t far behind, he actually took the corner just as fast Corey…if not a little quicker. But that was to be expected; Corey had to sacrifice a lot of speed on a corner like this one, a long, mild shoulder. Nevertheless, Daniel’s semi-drift had been impressive. He grabbed his walkie-talkie out of his pocked and pressed the “signal” button. Al’s stolid voice answered the call.
“How’d it go,” he asked flatly
“Danny took it super clean but BlueSue is still a length ahead,” said Michael.
“Damn, I didn’t want to hear that,” said Al, breaking his monotone for the first time of the night.
“What? Why not,” asked Michael.
“Corey pays as much attention to his rear-view as he does his windshield. If he sees someone on his tail taking corners fast he will begin racing above limits, even when he doesn’t have too,” said Alex with a slight sound of worry in his voice.
“So you’re saying Corey might race beyond his limits?”
“No, not his limits. I’m not sure is Corey has limits. I’m talking about the Supra.”
***
Smoothly tuned engines sang a song of peaks and valleys. Corey’s RPM meter floated up and down as he steered the Supra through an automotive ballet, and the headlights of the S2000 danced about the rear of his car as they both deftly navigated the road. Straights were far and few between now, they had descended into the tumultuous section of the run, the one locals referred to as “Anaconda Vices”. This is where the race got hectic. No longer were semi-slides an option, and grip was out of the question. The fastest way around these quick hairpins and 90’s was full on drifting.
The corners were all tight, but they varied from downhill to flat, even some slightly uphill. This is where the battle. Passing was impossible here; instead Corey was battling his physical being, his mental psyche, and the Supra in a 3-way duel. The fact that Danny and the S2000 was right behind him didn’t matter. Or did it?
He looked up into his rear-view and saw Danny at the safe length of a half-car behind him. He looked back out to the road again, this time a little too late. As he arrived at a flat hairpin way to fast he was forced forgo weight shifting and just turn the wheel to the right before yanking on his e-brake to have any hope of making the corner. The heavy back end of the Supra whipped around immediately and Corey began his throttle work. He was able to save from crashing, but had lost speed, a lot. Enough for Daniel to make pass…
Corey looked to his right and saw the trademark nose of the S2000 at his door on the inside. Corey immediately downshifted and powered out of the corner. The first remotely long straight in a while followed the corner and allowed Corey to put the S2000 at his tail. Another corner, however, fast approached, but the S2000 was forced to back off, not wanting to take the outside.
Corey was ready for this corner and weight-shifted BlueSue into a drift, but this time the black S2000 got parallel with him; a twin drift. Both 6’s, the turboed straight and the NA V, sang their tale of power in unison. Corey hit the accelerator, deciding it was the right time to pull the Supra out of its drift. He shifted and slammed the pedal, but this only created more wheel spin and smoke.
“Damn, losing grip!”
The Supra finally found traction, but was well outside Corey’s intended line. He had let it happen. He had drifted early on with Daniel when he didn’t need to. His tires were gone, the Supra generated so much wheel spin Corey couldn’t even imagine how bald his tires were right now. But it wasn’t over; less traction only meant he had less of a decision. There were two options; take it easy and accept defeat, or throw caution wind.
Corey doesn’t enjoy losing.
***
Danny saw it happening now. He was shocked to see Corey and the big Supra going drift for drift with him earlier, but it was obvious it was taking affect now. The corner before this one where he had almost past Corey was the last straw; Corey’s tires couldn’t do it anymore. The next corner approached and Danny was shocked to see Corey not relenting in his attack. Corey wasn’t going to give. But Daniel decided he was going to pass him anyway.
***
Al stood amongst the crowd at the bottom of the hill. He couldn’t help but imagine what acts of insanity Corey had committed himself to. Danny was a very talented driver, one who had come far in the never ending quest to filling the s2000’s potential. He was undoubtedly the fastest driver Corey had ever faced, and seeing someone so fast in his rear view would drive Corey over the edge. He’d do everything in order to keep the Honda away, but the Supra can’t do everything.
If he had a choice of cars, Alex was positive Corey wouldn’t pick a Supra as his racer. Although it comes with 320 hp stock and the ability of 1g at the skid pad, the Supra was large, heavy, and torquey. Corey inherited the car from his uncle, and anyone who would pass on a Supra for free is crazy.
His uncle had already improved the intake and exhaust system, so when Corey decided to take to the mountain all he did was lower it slightly before swapping in a new, stiffer, pair of springs. The hood, trunk, and wing were all carbon, and Corey had removed the sound deadeners, carpets, and that sorry excuse of a back seat. Even still, the Supra was a heavy car. It was then the walkie-talkie in Al’s pocket beeped for the third time of the night. He grabbed it out of his pocket and pressed the “speak” button.
“Yo, Lisa. How is it,” asked Al, although he was pretty sure he already knew the answer.
“It’s INSANE. It looked like Corey was under-steering but he just powered through it. He got crazy sideways and the tires were spinning so much he dumped a load smoke on us,” exclaimed Lisa. Al could here cheers in the background.
“How’s Danny doing?”
“He came through with a butter-smooth drift. Sliding like it was easy. He almost got side by side with Corey for a sec,” answered Lisa.
“Alright, see ya later,” said Al as he put the walkie-talkie back into his pocket.
It was happening. Corey was going full tilt even with hardly no traction. Al could here the faint sound of racing off in the distance. It was almost over…
***
The Supra and S2000 were seemingly having a conversation through roaring engines and screeching tires. Corner after corner, Corey went in full speed, turned the wheels, grabbed the e-brake, then held on for dear life. This was the ultimate in over the edge racing. All tactics and strategies were out of the window now. As long as Danny persisted in staying with him there would be no letting up.
***
Danny no longer could afford to take it easy some corners; he had to go flat out just to stay up to Corey. For some reason, the Corey with no traction was faster than the Corey who had it at the beginning. During the section with nothing but sharp corners he was at his worst due to the Supra. But now, where the straights were a little more frequent and the corners where faster he just relentlessly throws the Supra into each corner. Almost as if winning is more important than his safety. Every corner was an event in it’s self; the Supra would push more and more so on the next one Corey would go faster but break harder. And each time Danny was right there to match him. Another turn, and Danny exited to see the final curve looming. This is where his move would be made!
***
This was it…the last corner. Corey looked in his rear-view and could see into Danny’s car; he was that close. Bumper to bumper, they went down the final stretch before the final corner, a sloping left with limited space for a turn. Corey was aggravated to see the Honda stay with him on the straight, he really had no traction.
“Grip or now…this one is MINE!”
Corey went to the outside lane, and jerked the wheels to the right. The result was his traction less tires allowing the Supra to begin to slide facing right while going into a left turn. Corey then twisted the wheel all the way left, he felt the heavy tail end begin to come around performing a delayed pendulum drift.
The Supra started to make it’s decent to the inside, but was stopped half-way. Corey knew it immediately, too much speed with too little traction. Earlier in the race this would’ve been no problem, but not now.
***
Danny had decided on his line through the final turn long before reaching it. If he drifted, he’d be blocked by the Supra, and if he gripped, he probably wouldn’t be able to pass in time. So what to do?
Danny let the car start to get sideways as Corey in front of him tried to pull of a pendulum drift. Danny knew there would be a space Corey wouldn’t be able to get to due to lack of grip, it was when he saw that space he would go for the pass.
Then it happened, Corey’s drift was pushed to the outside by the understeer, there was the opportunity. Danny upshifted, searching for traction, and found it. The Honda hooked up and darted down under the Supra. He got it.
***
Corey watched as Danny darted under him, but could only think about passing him back for a second as his tail end smack into the guardrail. The hit sent the Supra fishtailing into the guardrail on the inside, impacting the other side of the tail end. The car bounced off the rail and went nose first into the outside rail.
A synopsis
-Supra pulls off ahead of S2K
-Starts off with proper tire preserving strategy
-Corey, the driver of the Supra, begins drifting the Supra because Danny, the S2K driver is staying with him.
-Corey begins losing traction, but doesn’t slow down, instead he fids a way to go a little faster
-Pushes the Supra too hard and crashes after he passes
As for where the story is going, Corey (who got the Supra for free from his uncle) will end up having to by his own car (a low-end one). He will also have to rethink his actions as a driver, seeing as he can’t rely on just having more power than people. Through all of this he comes to understand more about racing than he ever did before, all while steadily racking up wins and turning his new car into a serious machine.

Re: Boost: a street racing story
you should have more character development...is this the start of the book or what? like Civ said, this looks more like the beginning of a MOVIE than a book...but nonetheless some good writing...and I must says something about the cars....if you really want your novel to stand out, throw us a curve like Young mentioned and have a little diversity instead of the typical supertuner cars...throw in a mustang or viper or 'maro...or Old Z or possibly an M3??? i don't know just some suggestions....good writing though...

Re: Boost: a street racing story
sounds a little too much like intitial d episode 19-21 if i can remember correctly, but the supra in this was the R34 GTR, and the s2000 was the RX-7, but the GTR hit the RX-7 not the guard rail...

Re: Boost: a street racing story
lets move this to... nonspecific...
since it's a Fictional story, rather than the real deal.
