For about 3 years I have had the intermittent problem of my Blazers engine quitting while driving (dropping to 0 RPM, no engine noise) then it will sometime kick back in.. sometimes it will not. Most of the time I can just shut the car off and fire it back up again. It will always crank fine, like the original poster stated, but sometimes it will not start. I've had it happen where I leave the car for 20 minutes, come back and it will then start fine.

The check engine light does not come on due to this problem. The lights and all electrical will continue working even after the engine quits.

New wires, cap and rotor, plugs, ignition, among other things have been installed since the problem started.

Re: cranks wont start

later model vehichles have a fuel saftey switch , so that at sudden stops or flips the fuel pump turns off...maybe something is wrong with that system? that would be my guess

Re: cranks wont start

Thanks for the reply. Most of the time it happens while I am cruising however. It will occur when the engine is hot or cold as well.

I also want to note that I have replaced the fuel filter... as I noticed that this seems to be a common suggestion to any sort of stalling issues.

Re: cranks wont start

An intermitent stalling problem can be traced to a faulty ignition system, specifically either the crankshaft sensor(GM had all kinds of problems with early model crankshaft sensors), or the ignition module. There are diagnostic flow charts for this system. Also (very important), check both connections at the crankshaft sensor, and at the ignition module. A hint to virtually eliminate a connection problem is to slightly bend the metal contact/connection points inside the sensor(s). When you plug it in, because its a little bent, it will make a strong and positive connection to the harness connector - connection problems solved.

If it stalls and restarts again, its most likely a connection problem at one of these sensors. To check for this, start the truck up (its usually a good idea to do this when the truck is warm, heat expands things, connectors are no exception.) wiggle the connector at the ignition module and at the crankshaft sensor. If it stalls, or misses, slightly stops and resumes running - you have found your problem.

unh_fat_j, if you have no RPM reference, and it stalls and restarts, take a look at the crankshaft sensor first AND the connection.

Usually no codes will come up with this problem, so thats why its so hard to pinpoint, because when you go to test this system, it check out ok.

Classic symptoms of the dreaded Ignition Switch module.

Re: cranks wont start

cam shaft sensor , or the piock up coil as some call it.. mine was doing the same exact thing. if the pc senses no spark it wont let fuel go. 10 bucks to a doughnut cam sensor or crank sensor.

cam sensor is under the rotor button in the dist. assembly
