I thought that US laws prohibited any kind of tv/dvd displays in the view of the driver (coming from the factory, aftermarket is different and I thougth that they had a warning on the LCD displays). So even though its DVD rom based I would say that DVD movies have been disabled. I am sure that you could rewire or change this somehow.

The dealer I am visiting (seriously thinking of the G35 in late Sept) doesn't know either. Did some checking and the Nav unit is manufactured for Infiniti by a nippon company called Xanavi (www.xanavi.co.jp/e/). There is not much info on their site. It may be possible to view DVDs but I don't even know where the unit is mounted in a Nav equiped G35. Glove box, under seat, trunk they are all possibilities. You must be able to get at the unit because there will be regular dvd map updates (for additional $) as coverage increases and major changes are captured. Have a Pioneer unit in my son's MP3. That plays both. The law mandates (in FL anyway) that DVD movies can only be viewed while the car is stationary. So the Pioneer (and others, Alpine for one) ties into the vehical parking brake switch as an indicator. If I get more info I'll pass it along.

Unfortunatly you can not watch DVD movies on the Navi screen. But, The place I brought the car to have my windows done said they just converted a Lexus navigation screen into a Navi/DVD Movie screen. I think it was the product that was posted in a few messages above in the link. Its about $1,500 bucks or something but will reformat the screen to watch both movies and run the Navigation system from the stock screen.
When I find out for sure, you know I will be getting it!!!!

And yes, by law you are not supposed to watch them when moving, But your also not allowed to drive over the speed limit, so why give you a car with 260hp that screams GIVE ME MORE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Laws were made to be broken!

Just so you all know, the DVD system is located in the top glove box.
For poops and giggles, I went out and tried a DVD Movie in my system and nothing happens. It just says NAV DVD IS OUT OF SLOT

Did anyone find anymore information about the navi system in the g35 coupe? Excuse me for being gullible, but the dealer told me that a customer was able to do it with a Q45. It was a chip or coding. I wanted to cough "bS", but decided to look more into it.

The DVD Navigation system has a DVD reader drive, but no MPEG decoder to actually decode DVD movies. In order to get this to work, you need to either install an MPEG decoder in-line between the screen and the DVD NAV reader in the glove box, or install a seperate DVD drive somewhere in the car that is then spliced to the screen inputs. The latter would be much easier, and I'm not even sure if you CAN use the existing drive, even with the decoder. The screen is just a screen, so basically, if you could track down a wiring schematic and find the inputs, you could tap into them and make it show just about anything.

I think at this point, it's more trouble than it's worth from a cost standpoint unless you're an electrical engineer and can do it yourself.

thanks Nas. Of course this will be a do it myself thing. I have a few friends that work at auto sound system shops. they might be able to figure it out.

Thanks for pointing out the MPEG decoder issue. I just have to wait till january to actual get my hands on the car :D

Good luck. I opted NOT to get the NAV, because I almost never need directions, and the only reason I'd be getting it is b/c I would want to watch movies (gadget factor)...Upon hearing the complexity of it, I realized that to watch movies on the stock system would probably run me well over $3000...I said to myself, what can I get for $3000?
Hot Tub for the back porch, some serious engine upgrades, lots of stuff...and I just figured I'd rather have that stuff. I'd probably only be able to watch movies in my car like an hour or two a year, b/c I'm not one to do it while driving.

Someone did an install of an aftermarket Pioneer nav system that played DVD's in the stock space, and it looked pretty good and cost $1500 total...maybe I'll try that one day. Anyway, good luck, and enjoy the car when you get it. It's an amazing head-turner.

Why does people say that the g35 such an amazing head-turner. Is it because it is a new never seen before car.

There is a way to have auxiliary source for you factory NAV screen. Visit WWW.NAV-TV.COM I know for a fact this kit is available for shop install only. It’s not expensive, if you are in NYC area you can visit there shop for installation. I have a friend that did his SC 430 and his Nissan 350Z, looks great.

You guys should check out this link

http://www.unc.edu/~inorkuo/g35/

hit stop or the escape key before it redirects you to the Page could not be displayed page

this guy saved himself 2000 by not getting the factory nav system and he built his own for only 1500

he has a mini computer in the trunk that he built himself, a screen in the front, wireless keyboard attached, wireless sprint network connection, and copilot 2003 software for Navigation, also a DVD drive right behind the shifter!

its an awesome DIY install!

Hello,

There is a source you can contact to have your factory installed navigation screen converted to display any multi-media source, such as TV, DVD, PC, Video Games, Rear View Camera, Satellite TV and ETC. One of the sources to which I am referring is http://www.nav-vision.com or for more information you can call Rudy Z at 718 281-0511 or email me info@nav-vision.com

Regards,

Rudy Z
