Is 15mpg all I can get??

I have a 2000 1/2 ton 4x4 ext cab silverado w/ the 5.3L. It has stock tires and suspension. I recently installed a K&N air filter on it, but it still can only get about 15 mpg on interstate and about 13 or so in town. I have tried changing driving habits, but it doesnt seem to help. I have heard of guys having problems out of the fuel pressure regulator, but I dont know if that would lead to poor fuel economy. Havent tried tuning it up yet, but checked a plug and it looked new. Also tried changing the fuel filter. Anyone got any good suggestions what to try next or is 15 the best I can get out of it??

what type of fuel you are using cheap fuel like walmart gas, will cause great harm in your engine and lower fuel mpg

Re: Is 15mpg all I can get??

i drive about 50 miles a day and about 37 of it is highway miles and i am getting about 17.5 mpg i could probably squeeze a little better out of it if i changed my driving habits. i know quick starting and stopping is killing my mileage and most likely my brake pads too.

Re: Is 15mpg all I can get??

I've gotten 14 consistently out of my last 4 Chevy trucks regardless of engine size or gear ratio. '90 w/ 350, '95 w/ 350, '02 Tahoe 5.3, '02 HD 6.0.

Re: Is 15mpg all I can get??

i get 21 on highway if i set the crusie on 68 but I drop down to anywhere from 18 to 16 depends on the head wind if i kick it up to 70. take in that the truck is doing the calculation. So the numbers might be off. I had a 99 2500 6.0 with 2 single chamber flowmaster and 305 tires and I got 9 to the gal. But i couldn't keep my foot out of it

Re: Is 15mpg all I can get??

I had a 2000 Silverado 5.3, 4X4 w/3.73 and consistently got 19-21mpg on the highway (which was 90% of my driving). I'm a pretty easy driver and use the cruise whenever I can. My '06 Silverado with the same set up and lower gears doesn't do nearly that well...shoulda kept the 2000

BTW, nice truck 06Z71, especially the color

I've got a '04 4.8 2x4, and 15.7 is the best I can get out of it. And that's driveing like I'm 80 yrs old. Should of kept the mustang.

Re: Is 15mpg all I can get??

What I have been told that alot of the gas station that are not major gas station like(chevron texco, shell, exxon, etc.) The low Grade station mix there gas with all different additives that why they are cheaper than than the others I'am from south Louisiana and know alot of people that work in the oil field and thats what I've been told
