98 rodeo (please help)

I have read quite a few articles on here and I am still having problems.
My wife drives the vehicle (98 rodeo v6) and she came to me a week ago saying the vehicle Check engine light came on and the vehicle started slipping when she pulled off from stop.
I had the code read and replaced the egr valve. This had no effect on it.

What is the next step ?
She pulled out in traffic today and almost got rear ended since it was slipping and she let off the gas .
That is other thing. If you let it pull itself , it will sometimes get past the point of slipping.
It only does it when starting off .
thanks for your help.
TORI will be very happy if I can get this resolved.

Re: 98 rodeo (please help)

Do you service the trans as recommended? Maybe check the fluid level and change it if it hasn't been done lately. How many miles on the transmission? I hope 250K!

Re: 98 rodeo (please help)

this sounds like a low fluid problem or the range selector on the tranny is dirty.

if you have +100k on the same fluid then I wish you luck.

Re: 98 rodeo (please help)

This is an auto trans correct? I'd guess at low or very worn out ATF. 4L30E's need regular ATF changes to last. Hope you saved that $$$ EGR valve as the valves themselves rarely go bad. The EGR tubing is the culpret as it plugs with carbon.

Re: 98 rodeo (please help)

let me start with the egr.
I read a lot about the tube being clogged. I read it was the small hole .
THe small hole only goes down about an inch and then turns hard toward the engine. The larger hole goes into a tube.
How do you clean the smaller hole.

The trans. is automatic. How do I change the fluid on it myself? It is sealed.

Thanks for all the help.

I dont know if this is the range selector but Tori has to start the vehicle occassionally by pushing forward on the shifter (automatic), or putting it in neutral. Will that play any part on it?

good luck

As a smaller tube from egr, it goes to a throttle body ,take off air filter air duct of a throttle body open throttle manually and u will see the end of the EGR small tube ,u can clean it by removing a egr and spraying some fuel injector cleaner to the tube , it will flush out the carbon build up

Re: 98 rodeo (please help)

To change 3-4 qts of fluid, drain the fluid from the lower of the 2 plugs on the bottom of the tranny fluid pan. Then fill with a hand pump from the upper plug on the bottom back end of the pan. If you want, you can run the truck for a couple of days, then swap 3 or 4 more quarts out. The total capacity of the system is 9 qts, or so, if I remember right. The tranny fluid should be topped off with the truck running in neutral, and you should have someone shift through the gears a couple of times.

If you've never had it serviced, I would drop the pan, clean the magnet, pan, and filter (or replace the filter), and put it back together with a new gasket. The tranny flush at a lube place or the dealer is also an option.

There is loads of info on this board about how to treat your tranny right. Do a quick search to find info! I've never had problems with the range selector, but there is also lots of info about taking care of it, too.

Good luck and let us know how it goes!

Re: 98 rodeo (please help)

WOW, you guys have a lot of info. Now I have a hard one.
IF the transmission has leaked, how do I know how much I have
to put in?
I was told by someone about a month ago, after the vehicle sat and idled for a while, to get warm, it leaked into their driveway and it was red.
I never let it idle in my drive. There is no leak on the drive but there is red fluid toward the front lower portion.

You probably have the accumulator piston cover leak. Super common on the 4L30E. Dont drive it if you have not checked the ATF level. Kick back awhile & check out the FAQ's.

G/luck

Re: 98 rodeo (please help)

OK I WAS ABLE TO FIND THE PROBLEM> still need HELP
when I first started reading about the egr and the issues, I found that if the egr is bad, the car may skip / slip. That it may feel like a transmission issue. I was so sold on the egr and tube being bad that, I failed to look at a possible trans. issue.
I got under the vehicle and found red fluid. I cleaned it and then let the car idle. It was leaking trans. fluid. I read a lot on the forums here and then went and bought a pump and fluid. When I removed the fill plug- no fluid came out.
I let the car idle and started pumping. PUMPING to the tune of 3.4 quarts.
Now, i see a line coming out and going into the lower portion of the radiator. IT is a small hose. IT is wet but I cant fully determine it is the problem.
IS there a way to test different areas to find out where the issue is?
An example is a compression test on a motorcycle. You put a fixture in the spark plug hole and pump it up. IT will tell you the compression but in the event of a leak, it would let air out and you could determine the area.
IS there a way to do it with the trans. or should I take it somewhere (aamco) or somewhere else?
THanks for helping me.
