How do I tell what size bug engine I have? It is setting in our shed in peices.

there are sume numbers on ur block it normally starts with letters u give me the letters i look it up in my book and tell you..

The California motor means that it was made to meet California's more stringent smog laws in effect back then.
Even then the engine code is no sure way to tell engine size, since it may have been rebuilt to a larger displacement, sometime in its life.
The only true way to tell is to measure the piston or cylinder.
85.5mm = 1600
87mm=1641
90.5mm=1776
