97 rodeo 4wd

My 97 rodeo (with SOTF) will go into 4wd everytime if I do it immediately on a cold start, but not if I have been driving for a while. The transfer lever moves fine but I don't get the light on the dash. Occasionally, if I wait long enough it will go in when I have been driving for a while- 3 or 4 minutes. Any ideas?
Thanks

Your SOTF is operated by vacuum. There is a vacuum switch unit that has 2 switches mounted on it (1 gray and 1 blue) located on the front axle assembly beside the SOTF actuator. You can take it off and check it with a 12V source and blowing through the appropriate ports ( I will see if I can pull up the procedure). Check all vacuum lines and check valve. The check valve is the little cylindrical device (orange and black) in line with a vacuum hose from intake manifold in the engine compartment. This can be checked with a vacuum pump. A new switching unit costed me $120 CDN at a stealership. Mine is a 97 also (the redheaded 96-97 model) and the dash indicator is activated by a switch in the SOTF actuator. Some say it's a switch by the transfer lever but that's not the case with mine.
I hope this helps in you diagnoses. Please let us know what you find.
Good luck.
