Can I put a 350 in my 1986 Cougar?cougarboy 06-23-2002, 02:04 AM Hey all, I have a 1986 Cougar with a 5.0 liter 302 out of a Mustang in it, it's good power but not good enough. Would a 350 fit in the darned thing?:flash: Grendel 06-23-2002, 02:21 AM There are tons of bolt ons for the 5.0s in Mustangs... isnt your 5.0 the same motor? Pick up a summit racing catalog... blowers, headers, cams, you name it... -Grendel cougarboy 06-23-2002, 07:30 PM Well the 302 we took out of a mustang is going to crap, and all... MercCougarXR7 06-23-2002, 07:47 PM So put ANOTHER 302 in it, but a decent one :). Why go to all the agravation of installing a 350, changing tranny's, drive shaft, etc, and EVEN your computer (don't remember what year Ford started EFI). A 351 will bolt up to your AOD tranny, but you may have issues with that as well. If my 302 in my Cougar went, I'd either look at putting in the 5.4L Triton, or getting a rebuilt 302 and go from there :). http://crownvictoria.clanpages.com/merc/Merc%20Monkey%20and%20Kitty/CougarSigPic.jpg cougarboy 06-25-2002, 02:42 PM Heres a picture of my cougar, this is when i first baught it, now it has a new white paint job, new front fenders, springs, shocks, dual glass packs, low profile tires, and some other little intirior extras like a 8 ball on the tree. It also has 6 purple lights that glow in the grille. MercCougarXR7 07-02-2002, 12:24 PM The max they'll handle is about 600-700 :). That is with a lil bit of Nitrous. Ever read the Mustang boards? The 302 is an AWESOME engine to mod up. I'm buying the heads off of a 11 second car this summer, as he want's to go even faster. That'll shave a second off my 1/4 I bet :). BTW - NICE fox - I've always been a fan :). SkylineUSA 07-08-2002, 07:36 AM Max hp a 302 can handle is around 450-500hp, but you can crank it up to 600-700 and see how many seconds it will last. If you havce a A4 or Boss 302 block that is another story. Your best bet is to get you 302 rebuilt, and add some heads, intake, 1.7 rr with the stock cam is actually pretty good set up for the budget. You could just get a rebuild with a decent cam and spend 1800 on a A-trim ans bam you have about 325-350 to rear wheels, you'll need to upgrade a lot of stuff if you go any higher. Just remember cars are money pits, for the most part. the power you want, the less money you have, also do not forget that stopping is a good idea as well. You can have all the power in the world, but if you can not stop your car, bye bye car, and maybe you. Just some food for thought. cougarboy 07-10-2002, 11:10 AM Yea, I think I might try to find a rebuilt 302 and go from there, the one in my Cougar right now isn't showing good signs, and plus I just messed it up because a radiator hose blew up yesterday and it got so hot it stalled, It's actually sitting up the rode about 2 miles..ha ha, I think it should start up, I got a new hose I should go put it in... SkylineUSA 07-10-2002, 05:17 PM That car sounds like its on its last leg. :) MercCougarXR7 07-17-2002, 08:09 PM Max hp a 302 can handle is around 450-500hp, but you can crank it up to 600-700 and see how many seconds it will last LOL - I actually pulled that number out of my ass :D! Too many people think that a 302 is barely 'modable' - makes me sick! While I do know of some 600-700hp 302's, I do not know wether they are stock blocks or not. You probably know more about them than I do, and I'll take your word for it :). Yep CougarBoy - I did something similar once - blew one of the small hoses, and by the time the smoke came out of the hood, I noticed the temp guage was starting to climb. Went another 1/2 mile to an empty church parking lot, and the needle had almost hit the red line. Hindsight says - SHUT IT DOWN RIGHT AWAY IF YOU NOTICE THE TEMP GUAGE CLIMBING :D!!!! Not trying to take people away from this site, but you do know that there are Tbird/Cougar specific sites out there, don't you? SkylineUSA 07-18-2002, 04:15 AM Yeah, anytime you see a 302 in the 500hp+ range it has to be upgraded. Or it will just not last long. swamack 09-05-2002, 08:40 AM Why the hell do you want to put a 350 in a cougar. Put a 351C in it. Or a 351W in it. Maybe you should rebuild the 302. Look in Mustang magazines. There are many add ons that you can find. Like blowers, superchargers, and rebuild kits. Don't put a 350 in it. If you like the 350 so much then put it in a chevy. Not a Mercury.   SkylineUSA 09-05-2002, 12:49 PM Ahm, mmm, a blower is a supercharger :D I agree with ya on everything you said, swamack. swamack 09-09-2002, 07:57 AM Thank you Automotive Network, Inc., Copyright ©2012
