'97 Honda Passport with 3.2 liter engine stalls...

I am have a '97 Honds Passport 4x4 automatic with 230,000 miles with he only problem was the starter going a few years ago, no repairs on the car...ran great until this morning...I need to change the belts on the car (they squeal when the car starts up...I have been lazy). I driven the car last night...no problem...ran well...but this morning... I started the car and the belts were squealing, but when I start driving the car, it idles real rough...the tact moves up and down...when I come to a stop, most of the time she stalls or comes very close to stalling...what could this be...my plan is to replace the beltls (alternator belt, etc.) and then replace the fuel filter....does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks for your time,

Peace,

Terence

Wow! 230K! Cool.

One question, we have some research going on , is this an automatic or 5-speed? If it's an auto, is it your original tranny??

Sounds like a belt slipping to me.

Re: '97 Honda Passport with 3.2 liter engine stalls...

Hello!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi Ramblin Fever,

Thanks for your fast response...it is an automatic...the original..the only repairs I had done are the starter, 2 batteries and an alternator...al original and paid for...I like the truck...moved to FLorida two years ago and the sun is taking it's toll on the paint...but it will be repainted soon....so, you think that the belts slipping could cause the problems that my car is having...I will admit...I have been lazy about changing them and it is planned for this weekend...but you think this could be caused by the belts?

Thanks in advance for your reply,

Peace,

Terence

I was just out in the garage tightening the alternator belt. It was squealing at every take off. Glad to hear you've gotten so many miles (I hope you're not from Canada and those are kms) out of your auto tranny!

Since you need to replace the belts regardless, that is clearly the first thing to do. If the belt is slipping, the alternator may not be producing enough voltage and that could affect the fuel pump. If no dash lights are coming on at all, then it could be a bad O2 sensor. I had a bad O2 sensor that caused similar symptoms without triggering a CEL.
