now i have heard from many people that the tranny will blow on the taurus models easily, but is their any faulty parts on this to cause that or is their any parts i can replace on the tranny to prevent this from happening? I really dont want to have to replace the whole thing and ANY fixes that will give me a couple thousand miles extra on the tranny would be most appriciated!

sorry but this is just funny: :newbie:

I think a lot of the problems were caused by a plastic piston, maybe it was aluminum, not sure which material. I want to say forward clutch piston, again not 100% sure though.. It would fracture and disintegrate, sometimes screwing up the internals..it can be replaced with a steel piston,,

I believe it is plastic.

Another thing that will ruin your tranny is the speed sensor.
I have had that replaced 3 times already and it will make your tranny shift wrong and end up thrashing it if not fixed.
You can tell your speed sensor is going out, or is out by seeing your speedometer fluctuating when you drive.Sometimes it will get stuck. Also you can feel it shifting wrong.Sometimes you start off in the wrong gear as well.

It is not easy to replace either. On a 99 LX anyway. Not expensive either to replace. The part is like $30

Replaced my fluid every 50,000 kms, used ford Mercon V fluid, replaced filter every 100,000 kms, so fluid flush 50k, fluid and filter 100,000k, my 98 taurus se has 270,000 kms and not one tranny problem.

Install Tranny cooler - Send me a p.m. if you need help with that, I have a nice little guide for that

Change fluid every year

Some people may or may not like this one but add a bottle of lucan transmission fixer stuff. It quickend up the shift on mine and quicker shifts are better.

ok, so i understand that you need to flush out the tranny and put new fluid in it. but i have never done this procedure. If someone could point me to a article about how to do this or give me a quick walkthrough about how to do this it would be most appriciated!

where could i get my hands on some of this, and why would some people not like this method? Is their a risk in adding this fluid to the transmission?

ps: sorry about reviving an old thread, i just had some more questions on the subject.

Just found out yesterday, I gotta have my trans, ax4s 94 Taurus 3.0, 68k miles, rebuilt.. infamous piston problem, classic symptoms,, just happened out of the blue Thursday, I'm still driving it though,, going to be around 1400 dollars.. funny thing though, initial engagement into any forward range is harsh, in overdrive range, it shifts thru all gears like everything is fine,, in drive range will not shift 2-3,, code 647, incorrect ratio, in hard memory... tried some of the trans tests while in in overdrive range, upshift and downshift points, converter unlock, all work exactly as noted in book, weird but trans guy says it's for sure the bad piston, says it will hang up,, also told me don't be surprised this weekend if the trans decides to work perfectly too, until the piston hangs up again... first trans problem I've ever had in 33 years of driving, Taurus only cars I've owned since 1987,, still the best car out there, son's 93 has probably over 140k, original trans still.. thanking my tax man for the big refund, lol..

It helped me. Its really 50/50. Some people get too much slip with their auto tranny with it. Worst case scenario, you'd have to flush out the fluid.
