All Convertible VW bugs, from 1949-up were built at the Karmann plant in Osanabruck. Although technically a different company, the were primarily building VW verts. Later they built the Karmann Ghia (so named for a design by an Italian concept car firm started by Giacinto Ghia)
Karmann now makes the convertible roof components for European car makers such as Mercedes, VW and Audi.
