Auto to manual tranny55chevyman 01-31-2006, 04:48 PM I have been looking to buy a 68-72 Nova for a while now. I am waiting to get a good buy, money is a little tight since I'm still in college. I have rebuilt a 55 chevy truck that was my grandads so I know my way around a car a little. But it is a straight six so not all that fun, but I love the sound no one really has straight pipes on that engine so it's kinda unique around town. All of the Nova's I have seen for a good deal have been automatic's and that would just take all the fun out of the car. Would it be to hard or expensive to transfer one over. Any suggestions would help, yall know your stuff way better than I do. Thanks, Michael artnovaguy 02-01-2006, 12:31 PM youre right, it is kinda tricky to find a decent manual nova these days, but its not impossible. if you really wanted a manual tranny nova, id try to find an originally manual car, even if the tranny was bad, you wouldnt have to change so much by just replacing the old tranny with a new muncie or saginaw stick shift. i think theres a kit you can buy wih all the parts to switch from an auto to manual, but i forgot the website, theres a small amount of welding, and its just not as easy as starting from a manual car to begin with. my friends brother swiched his 91 camaro from auto to manual, and after the initial week of putting it together, he spent about a month taking it apart and putting it back to gether to make things right again. not to discourage you, its not impossible, its just not as easy as your run of the mill bolt on addition. i hope this is helpful, if i can find that website with the switch kit, ill post it. max 55chevyman 02-01-2006, 08:39 PM Thanks Max, I'll keep on looking. I have welded a couple of times, but I am by far no expert, I would not trust it to hold anything. I found a site with the conversion kit http://www.ss396.com/nova.htm it's a pretty cool site. Thanks again for the advice. Michael TimCC 03-01-2006, 09:54 PM Its been about 25 years ago but I have done a couple of change overs before using factory parts. Of course now you will probably have to buy the change over stuff from one of the places that have been mentioned. If you could find the pedals and arms its a pretty easy switch. The bracket for the cluch arm just bolts on to the frame and to a ball screwed into the side of the engine block. The pedals switch right out with the break pedal for an automatic. If I remeber right Nova and Camaro pedals from those years are the same. Good Luck! 55chevyman 03-02-2006, 02:29 PM Thanks Tim. I was wondering why it would be so hard. I'm am just planning on getting a roller, and switching it. Does the kit you are talking about require welding? Thanks again for the info. Mike jonnyboy9012 03-03-2006, 01:33 AM I Had to change my 72' Nova from auto to manual. Well, i didnt HAVE to... but im a huge fan of putting the power straight to the ground and not sending it through a TQ converter. I got a borg warner 5 spd out of an 80 something IROC camaro and did some minor work to the bellhousing and cut a hole in the floor board with a grinder. It was a very simple swap. Just make sure to take your measurments and you will be just fine. Hope i helped a little bit. If you need step by steps or anything just PM me. Automotive Network, Inc., Copyright ©2012
