93 Lumina Warm Starting Issues

OK. New problem. When I start my 93 Lumina first thing in the morning or after I get off of work (when the engine is cold) it starts fine. But when the engine is warm, say for example I go to the store after work and when I come out the store to start the car, it's hard to start. It will turn over but it immediately dies out. After doing this about two or three time, it will finally run or when I depress the pedal. Is this my fuel pump going bad?

Sounds like your EGR valve is slow to close and sticking open causing the fuel mixture to be too lean at start up. Is there any check engine light on?

No engine lights. Is it possible there could be some carbon build up on the valve that needs to be cleaned off?

Re: 93 Lumina Warm Starting Issues

I would begin with coil pack/ignition module. Ignition modules are known for working when they are cold, but when they get hot they fail. The EGR valve could cause trouble starting but it's not likely the valve can completely eliminate the car from starting. Also, if the EGR valve was faulty, a code would be shown since it is an emision related element. My advice, start with the basics: plugs, wires, ignition coils, control module or possibly crank sensor.

EGR's don't always trip a code, especially when they are just slow responding. By the fact that the car will start with the gas pedal pressed indicates a start-up fuel mixture problem, which eliminates the crank sensor (the car is getting spark). The tune-up is a good idea, as the keep it simple principle is always a good idea.
