Light Up The NightVTISC007 01-23-2006, 10:52 PM Does anyone have opinions regarding auxillary off road lights? I know there are very expensive ones and there's Pep Boys specials. I also know that expensive isn't always better. Can anyone give me an educated opinion on what to look for in a good quality light. Thanks. 4Wheel 01-24-2006, 09:04 AM What are you looking to do? There are ones that are BIG but are for yuppies. Then there are the small ones that look "pretty" both off and lit up but don’t do squat! Then there are the serious sealed beams that you can't take a chance of even having them on during the day because you will blind the on coming traffic. These however at night can be too bright! I came up on a huge yellow run-a-way truck ramp sign and the reflected light blinded me, couldn't see the road. Be very careful about the candle power ratings I saw one for 10 million CP BULLSHIT! It won't even light the back yard. I have always favored the aircraft landing lights they run hot and concentrate the light only where you need it 1mile down the road not kidding here. DO NOT GET CAUGHT WITH THESE BAD BOYS UNCOVERED THEY ARE ILLEGAL FOR HIWAY USE AND SAY SO RIGHT ON THE BACK. That being said there is one more sealed beam that is brighter than the aircraft landing lights, they are "Wagoner Sealed Beam Off Road Lighting #4049 spot flood" YUMMIE!!!! About $24 for each sealed beam then you need a holder too. BUT WELL WORTH IT! These don’t state illegal for hiway use on the back but you will still get the ticket. Just have someone drive your rig towards you with them on and it self evident. Napa can order the Wagoners. Do you want a wide dispersion lens or a flat beam? VTISC007 01-24-2006, 11:23 AM I guess they call them "pencil beams". I don't need the "flood" lights right now, but I guess it doesn't hurt to have both "pencil" & "flood". I need to see far ahead of me. I realize that these types of lights are illeagal for highway use; also, I realize that it's not always a good idea to drive through Baja at night. Driving down any country road at night could be dangerous because of crossing cows and deers and stuff. Many of the locals down in Baja drive their rigs with no lights....they don't work! I want that extra distance in lighting down the road for the times that I do have to drive at night. Those Wagoners seem to be a good idea. Besides, I wouldn't even know where to get aircraft lights from. 4Wheel 01-24-2006, 01:18 PM Aircraft landing lights are normally stocked at Napa surprisingly, and are made by Wagoner also. We were looking in the book for them when the sales person and I noticed the 4049 where even brighter!!!! So the testosterone engaged and monies were exchanged and the deer cant see anymore! More surprisingly not too many know about them and their power. One problem with such a narrow powerful beam is that they MUST be kept aligned exactly or you great shots of owls or worms. You will NOT be disappointed. Can they be turned on for extended periods of time without melting or burning things? What kind of holder...can the holder be purchased at Napa or is it something homemade? 4Wheel 01-25-2006, 02:17 PM No, they are only hot directly in front of them. Yes they can run hours with a cooling wind on them. (I've never burned one out) Napa has the holders also. They are standard sealed beam mounts with tabs at 90 degrees.
