what oil shoul I usebuckeyboy 01-18-2006, 09:53 AM I have a 97 s-10 blazer 142000 miles slight ticking runs great what oil should I now be using synthetic? should I flush engine?? any advise would be helpful.:screwy: drdd 01-18-2006, 10:14 AM My 97 loves its Mobil 1 synthetic. The Mobil 1 took away a slight tick in mine. blazee 01-18-2006, 10:30 AM I'd recommend Mobil1 as well, for Rhode Island you should go with the 5w30. Make sure that you use a good filter, AC Delco and Wix filters are good choices. I perfer NAPA Gold (It's made by WIX, the WIX branded filters aren't available at any of my local stores). The flush is optional, and not required. There is also a slight risk of engine damage when doing a flush especially at higher mileages. If you choose not to do a flush, your oil will not be as effective for the first few changes, this is because the oil will be cleaning the build up in your engine that the flush would have removed. dmbrisket 51 01-18-2006, 01:49 PM i reccomend a flush only if you neglect oil changes, otherwise a good synthetic 5w30 or even possibly a 10w30, in the winter (when i drove mine in the winter) i ran 5w20 in it, it stayes a little thinner at temp and helps improve volumetric flow buckeyboy 01-20-2006, 07:47 AM Thanks for the info on the oil seems like every one is in agrement. synthetic oil is the way to go . I appriciate the responces. I will also not be flushing as I chane the oil pretty regularly and will give the synthetic time to do it's job. BlazerBoyLT98 01-20-2006, 10:16 AM I will never use anything other then Mobil 1. If I can't find Mobil 1 I get Castrol Syntec. Good luck 534BC 01-20-2006, 03:38 PM I have been using 15w40 marine/dsl Amsoil in my 95 for 8 years. Changed once per year. I recommend this slightly thicker oil. berniescout 01-20-2006, 11:03 PM i use the least expensive full synthetic when i buy oil. add one quart of natural at change. top off when i check the oil as needed with what is at hand. (natural or synthetic) change oil again when it gets dark , at 8000 miles still clear at 10k getting dark changed at 12 k with ac pf52 filter 97 blazer 120K always use 5w30 dmbrisket 51 01-21-2006, 09:54 PM jeez 534bc, that is putting some serious load and doing some cold start damage in the winter if its cold where you are, 15 is to thick of a viscosity for our trucks to start with in the good ol' am gman2153 01-21-2006, 11:46 PM I have used and use Pennzoil & Fram filters in all my vehicles. In winter I use 5W20 in the Blazer & S10. I realize synthethics may have technogical advantages, but since I change oil every 3000 miles or less I do not feel the added cost of syn oil is justified. Besides. I believe that oil is like our blood and removes alot of the bad things in the engine, hence I do not buy into the arguement of "extended oil life" that the marketers of synthethics claim. I have never had an engine problem in my life, so I must be doing something right. dmbrisket 51 01-22-2006, 04:27 AM if the moter is seasoned or well broke in, theres realy not a whole lot being taken out, unless there is gas in there, then its is removing hydrocarbons, different subject, but the extened life synthetic is a pro con system, yes you can get 5 to 8 grand on it safely, but it cost more, and you wouldnt see a problem as quickly as with petrol, the 350 goin in my dime is goin to get its first shot with petrol base oil, then synthetic every 4.5 to 5 at the most, yes it costs more, but what are you goin for? me its proformence, with a daily driver petrol is just fine, high end needs a little more behind it to protect your investment Cam1959 01-23-2006, 02:44 PM Using regular oil, it burns a little puffing smoke just on occiasional cold startups, causing me to have to add about 1 liter after about 2 months. With full synthetic, no smoke ever seen and level does not drop. I'm above Minnesota so use 5w30 winter and 10w30 summer. It's a 1983 2.8 v6 s10 4wd Blazer Tahoe with about 300,000 kms. 534BC 01-23-2006, 04:11 PM jeez 534bc, that is putting some serious load and doing some cold start damage in the winter if its cold where you are, 15 is to thick of a viscosity for our trucks to start with in the good ol' am Hmm, you mean a increased load on the oil pump and drive? I suppose it has less load than a new tight engine with thinner oil. I keep in a heated garage all the time anyways and never rev too high when cold. I use it mostly because of the 40 W and the price. I had used it for about 10-12 years after using delvac for about 10+ years. It is also a very good oil. magnum3456 06-25-2006, 02:49 PM I have a 1996 4x4 S-10 Blazer LT blah blah 4.3L anyways...it has 119200 miles on it...is it still ok to use Mobil 1 synthetic oil and should i get Mobil 1's filter too?
