Fan control / running lights.

Hello,

Been reading as many threads as I can regarding fan control/heater problems. Seems to be a common problem area for GP's.

Here's the situation with my 2000 GP GT.

Start car with fan control off - daytime running lights come on but if I then select any setting 1-5, fan does not come on and running lights go off. If I then switch fan control back to off, running lights come back on.

Start car with fan control on 5 - running lights come on and fan comes on most of the time. If I then select any other setting (1-5) fan goes off and running lights go off until setting "off" is set.

Seems to effect the fog lights in the same way.

How the lights and fan control are associated is beyond me?? I replaced the resistor in 2004.

Any ideas of what the problem(s) could be? I can't imagine how the two are related but one seems to effect the other.

Many thanks.

Re: Fan control / running lights.

Interesting problem. If you've reviewed some of the past posts they will mention the ignition switch as a possibility. Your problem appears to be a variation. The contacts carbon up causing high resistance which causes the 12v feeding the lighting system to act up to include HVAC blower problems. However when the ignition switch gets really bad it may cause probems with the DIC, turn signals, headlights blinking on/off, cruise control, etc. but yours has not progressed that far. The HVAC system and lighting system to include fog lights will draw the most current.

Just for troubleshooting try pulling the DRL fuse and see what it does. Note: With DRL fuse out auto headlight system will be disabled so you will need to manually turn on the headlights when you need them.

Also, if you have a multimeter and know how to use one, check the 12v at the DRL fuse socket to see if there is a voltage drop.

Report back findings and we can go from there.

Re: Fan control / running lights.

Sounds like the problem is with the ignition switch harness.

Here's a couple of links that will give you further insight into the problem just in case your search missed them. One was written up by Big-L (Larry).

Re: Re: Re: Fan control / running lights.

WOW,

The first question I've asked on the forum, and it appears as if you guys
have nailed it. I read the two threads below and it sounds exactly what the problem is. I do hear a clicking sound coming from the area near/under the steering column area. I'm going to get some prices for an ignition switch control module/harness and pick one up. In the meantime, I'll have my mechanic check the contacts for carbon and see if cleaning them helps. If it does, then it's safe to say that definitely was the problem.

Thanks so very much.

I have the same problem with a 99 GP.

So replacing the ignition switch harness AND OR cleaning/replacing the key tumbler will remedy the problem

Just the ign switch and harness seen below. The key tumbler is separate and unless you are having problems with key getting stuck it is probably OK. They are two separate parts. The contacts that go bad are in the black module.
