2005 neon tranny conversion....

I bought a 2005, automatic neon sxt with the SRT appearance package, I wanted the real SRT but I would have had to wait about 2 months. I figured I could get my neon to the same lvl as the SRT, but no one else thinks it is possible. I want to do an engine and tranny swap but i dont know if it is possible. Should I go that route or should I just try to beef up the engine in it already. Thanks for any help and/or suggestions.

You can't get close to the SRT w/o boosting your neon. You can swap in the SRT-4 engine and tranny along with the gauge cluster, but it will take some time and money. I don't know all the details of what you would need to do, but the engine will fit. I would think the best route to go, would be to get a wrecked SRT that way if you need a specific sensor or whatnot it's already there. I don't know much about the SRT engine and it sensors and how it will vary from the standard neon. So there might be some snags and you will have to do alot of reading.

thanks for the advace, I am thinking that the engine and tranny swap is the best way to go. I just have no idea how to get started. Any ideas, are there parts that I can get now for the 2.0 that I can use when I swap for the 2.4? Also, is there a brake conversion for a regular neon to make it 4 wheel disk? Thanks again.

Like I said before, I don't know any details about performing this swap, so my answer is pure theory. If you are going to swap out the entire engine and tranny, you will also have to use the SRT's PCM. I would recommend going with a Stage I pcm just for kicks. The SRT also has something called sentry and if the stock pcm has seen it, then I know it will not work in the first gen neon. I have no idea about a sec gen though. Thats why some people go with the Stage I pcm when they swap in the SRT engine. I would not think you would need parts if you swap in the whole thing. Again, I don't know where the motor mounts are in either case, so you will have to find out for yourself. Try asking some mechanics at a Dodge dealership.

I believe you can use the brakes from the SRT to put on your neon, but I don't know about any brake conversion kit. Thats why I would say to get a wrecked SRT and strip it down and use whatever parts you want to. There's enough dumb "kids" driving around with them and wrecking them left and right now.

Re: Re: 2005 neon tranny conversion....

I have called several places and found out that the motor mounts are in the same place and the motor will line up. I am just wondering if there are parts that I can put on the stock motor that I will be able to use on the new motor. Also, what else should I swap first before the motor. I want the motor to be the last thing I swap so I know that the car can handle it. Thanks again for the help.

I wouldn't bother putting parts on your current motor. Some parts may swap but you are talking about putting 2.0L engine parts on a 2.4L turbo engine, not a good idea. You may want to upgrade the axles, because I doubt the stock neon axles are ready for the torque you will be able to lay down Better shocks and springs may be a good idea also.

Re: 2005 neon tranny conversion....

If you are going to swap motors, I may be interested in buying your old one. Let me know if you would want to get rid of it.
It would have to fit in a 2000 Neon though, but that shouldn't be a problem.

Re: 2005 neon tranny conversion....

This project will cost you thousands of dollars (probably $8,000-$10,000).
Howell Automotive has done this project before and could probably give you a complete parts list and instructions that an expert mechanic could follow.
Most of the parts you could get from a totalled SRT, you would want to buy the whole car, this may keep you expense down to a reasonable level, rather than buying all new parts. You may consider having the 2.0l engine you already have boosted. The compression ratio in '05 was dropped to 9.3:1 and is perfect for a 8-10psi boost with intercooler. The auto trans will hold up to 250hp and 250 foot lbs of Torque if you have a shift kit installed in it.

Re: 2005 neon tranny conversion....

by the time you spend the money on teh swap, it would have been cheaper to sell what you have and buy an srt. they arnt that much more than the sxt, especially if you get options on the sxt

But the insurance would be cheaper if he did the swap , but yeah he would probably end up spending more money in the car itself.
