1988 cherokee wont startmicjunka 01-06-2006, 06:20 PM I own a 1988 Jeep Cherokee Pioneer. While driving my truck it was bogging down and would not accelerate. The next day it would not start. I checked the battery, the spark plugs, all fuses under the dash, i changed the fuel filter. it still will not start. When i crank the engine the is no fuel flowing. I was in formed there should be an inline fuse for the electric fuel pump but i dont know where it is. I dont want to have to bring it to a mechanic if i dont have to. Saudade 01-07-2006, 11:49 PM How did you determine there was no fuel flowing? When you turn the key to the ON position (not Start), you should hear the fuel pump humming. You also should check the fuel pump relay. It's in the engine compartment, under the cover behind the battery. There's a bank of 4 relays. I think the second from the front is the fuel one. They're all the same so swap them around and see if it helps. There is also a ballast resistor (white ceramic) next to the air filter box. Try bypassing it (not just disconnected but jumpered across). micjunka 01-08-2006, 02:38 PM How did you determine there was no fuel flowing? I just switched the relays around but no change. I can not find the ballast resistor but i will continue to look. Should I replace the relays? dave92cherokee 01-08-2006, 03:53 PM When you turn the key to the on position do you hear a humming noise? If you do then the fuel pump is engaging sending the fuel to the engine. If there is a hum and no fuel comes out then check the fuel filter as it might be clogged preventing any fuel from flowing to the engine. If there is no hum heard and you have tried changing the relays around then the problem is not with the relays unless the one's you swapped with are bad as well. If you don't hear a humming sound then either in the wiring to the fuel pump or the pump itself has gone out. I'd check and replace the filter first as it's the cheapest and easiest thing first. micjunka 01-08-2006, 04:06 PM When you turn the key to the on position do you hear a humming noise? I have already changed the fuel filter and thats where i checked the fuel flow from before and after the the fliter change. Automotive Network, Inc., Copyright ©2012
