Unhappy Car fires but won't run

My son has a 92 Grand Am. I believe it is a 2.3L. When we turn the key to the on position we can here the fuel pump whirl and then start the car but it only runs for about 2 sec and dies. The last time it did this we thought it was the fuel pump and we replaced it but no luck. We then took it to our mechanic who told us that the fuel pump we installed was bad and we paid him to replace it again. Everything was fine for about a year then the same thing happened again. So we replaced the fuel pump once again but still no changes. We replaced the ignition control module but that made no difference either. After taking it back we bought a position crank sensor and installed it but still no difference. Any ideas as to what else we can try?

Re: Car fires but won't run

If you spray carb cleaner into the intake and it keeps running then it is a fuel delivery problem, you need to check the fuel pump circuit using an available wiring diagram. BTW, the oil sending switch is in this circuit, look at the connector and wiring at that area.

Given all the fuel system problems you have had I would start with a fuel filter, if you haven't already replaced that.

Secondly remove the oxygen sensor, then see if it runs longer. Im thinking you may have a plugged up catalitic converter that chokes it off after a few mins of running. Check to see how much exhaust is coming out of the tail pipe.

Third i'd try replacing the fuel pressure regulator at the end of the fuel rail (it has a vacume line connected to it).

im putting my 2 cents on it being the catalitic converter

How about the harness feeding voltage to the pump ? Bad ,bent broken pins , crimped/broken wire (They can break inside and you'd never know), corrsion. Check moving the harness up , down ,side to side to see if the fuel pump cuts out when running. Be Careful.!!!
