What type of intake for GTP?

I've got a 97 GTP, 75K that i just got a few weeks ago. I want to go ahead and put a cold air intake on it but i don't really know what type i should go with. I guess the three major systems i've looked at are the SLP, the Thrasher and the K&N Air Charger. The Thrasher and SLP seem to be similar. What's the difference between the open cone (like a K&N) and the cold air boxes like the SLP? Pros and cons? Which are u guys using?

Any of the three are acceptable. The SLP cold air box works well with a ram air hood since it is designed for that purpose. The Thrasher and K&N are widely used by a lot of GTP owners.

Re: Re: What type of intake for GTP?

I have a Thrasher.

Removing PCM is easy and DIY. You'll remove it by disassembling the stock air box and removing the air box in its entirety. The Thrasher has a provision for mounting the PCM to it.

Since you have '97 GTP, you will need to can the old coolant reservoir and get one for a '99 and up. The new reservoir will mount on the passenger side strut tower.

Re: What type of intake for GTP?

I guess what i'm really trying to ask is what the idfference between the cold air box induction like the SLP and the open cone like the K&N is? in which type is the trasher? It seems like there's more risk in running an open cone, but more gain... am i right?

The Thrasher and SLP are cold air intakes meaning they draw fresh air from the frontal area which is open to cold air behind the headlight and from inside the inner fender cavity. Also they have heat shield insulators that keep away engine heat.

A lot of your open cone intakes are not as effective because they draw in heat from the engine compartment. I would say the contary the most gain will be from true CAIs or FWIs not open cone.

Re: What type of intake for GTP?

ok, that's exactly what i wanted to know, so thrasher/SLP seems to be the way to go? Any opinions between these two?

Flip a coin. I'd be too biased because I have a Thrasher. The SLP is good too. It will probably be down to cost since both are effective. Good luck in your decision.

Re: What type of intake for GTP?

Yet another road block... what about the Wizaired system from ZZperformance... if that thing is as good as they claim, it would be hands down the best intake choice.

The Wizaired is comparable to the other two and I would not put any money on the table as to which is superior. The cost is reasonable. The Wizaired is popular with guys running intercoolers and LS1 throttle body conversions.
