Exclamation Transmission issues

I have a 90 Accord, and the S light has been flashing, and I know what thats all about. The New issue is that the tranny is slipping. It seems like i have to force the car to go. It also takes a long time to shift. It seems like it takes a week to get to 4th gear, if I'm even getting there. I'm worried that I'm gonna wreck my tranny. Payday isn't for about a week! Anyway, is this just the S thing getting worse, or am I causing damage in some other way? Any help will be appreciated.

Re: Transmission issues

Two separate issues even though shifting into 4th gear and lockup could be caused by the speed sensor. The slipping on startup probably means the transmission is going. Have you changed transmission fluid recently?. If not that would probably be the cheapest place to start in your troubleshooting. How many miles on the car?

Re: Transmission issues

Honda's Tranny is strong. Most of the problem is electronics. Pull the code, you will have a better place to start.

Does the slipping happen at start-up? If the tranny is stuck in 4th gear, the acceleration will be slow, but highway drive is good. If you manually shift the gear to 1st or 2nd at startup, will that change anything?

When you depress the brake padel before you pull the shift stick out of Park, do you hear a click from the base of the shift stick?

Another possibility is your TCM. It's a famous problem for 90-92 Accord.

Provide more info if you can.

Re: Transmission issues

Based on vicchang's comments I found a site that may give you some more information re transmissions. After entering the site: http://autorepair.about.com/library/a/bl_japan_18.htm do a search for honda accord s light. There appears to be a lot of information here that is new to me.

Re: Transmission issues

Well, at startup everything seems fine. Then while driving, usually the first couple of gears are fine. It does take longer to shift, but on the highway it seems like getting up to 60 is gonna wreck my car. It's so hard. Anyway, it seems like the first few gears it takes about as long to shift as it normally does when I have it on the "sport" function. It worsens when the s light is flashing. I dunno.I'm pretty lost.
