dash lights and tail lights

I was driving tonight and all of a sudden I heard a fuse pop and my dash lights went out. A cop pulled me over later and told me my tail lamps were out. Has anyone had this problem before? I know I should break out the wiring diagram, but I'm just seeing if anyone has had it happen and perhaps could save me some time by pointing me in a general direction

I also replaced the fuse and it blew instantly. I only have basic knowledge of electrical systems and anybody who could help out would be greatly appreciated

Yes, I have seen similar problems on cars. Using a wiring diagram as a guide, check switches, connections, then physically check the wiring. Be patient and methodical. Make an enlarged copy of your wiring diagram, this will make it easier to make notes and to mark off areas of the circuit you have checked.
