Giving it gas, but no power
I have recently been having problems with my 1993 GrandAm 3.3l v6. It has been very slow to accellerate the last few weeks even when I floor the gas pedal and it will sometimes jerk when I am up to speed (around 40 usually). This last weekend when I tried to start it, it started fine, but would die almost immediately. After the 3rd time, I gave it some gas and it kept running. This morning on the way to work, it was acting worse than ever. There were times that I couldn't get the car over 20 mph even by flooring the gas pedal. Please help me figure out what is wrong. I've got new spark plugs, spark plug wires, alternator, battery which are all under 15,000 miles old if that helps.

Welcome to the forum. It sounds like your fuel pump is going south and is having trouble keeping up. Do you have any check engine lights? My first guess would be the fuel pump.

btw also a dirty/old fuel filter can cause week performance.

The fuel filter is fairly new (less than 15k miles), but I may try replacing that first. I was also leaning towards the fuel pump being bad. I've got a chilton's manual, but havn't looked into the procedure. Is the fuel pump hard to replace?

XI's deffinately right about the fuel filter... you should change that first (only like $10) before you run out and buy a new fuel pump. Even if it isn't the filter, I'm sure it could use a change. And as far as it being hard, I'd say yes - you're going to have to drop the fuel tank, so it's deffinately not going to be easy.

I don't think that I would be able to install a new fuel pump since I'm not too car savy. I've done a few things like a starter, and hub assembly, but I'd rather not mess with the gas tank. Hopefully a fuel filter fixes the problem.

Oh the tanks not bad to take out. Its the rusty bolts on those straps, and its usually half full (or more) of gas when it needs the fuel pump replaced. Just hav to hav a good syphon.
I'd rather change the FP than do a trans fluid/filter change. dont evn hav to jack up the car.

another thing, if the present fuel filter has chunks of stuff running out when you take it out, chances are you'll need a pump soon. If theirs stuff in the filter, the screen filter on the FP in the tank has a hole or two letting debrei through the pump. Good luck mikeserve
