Question reading codes

I was wondering if I could read codes from a flashing check engine light on a 97 LS? or do I need a scan tool? I use to be able to jump a couple leads with a paperclip on my old ford pickup which would send me through a bunch of flashing lights that could be interpreted into a engine troble code.

thanks

I don't think so. That's pretty old technology that I think went out when OBDII came in. Go to Autozone and get your codes read for free.
