locating transmission drain 98 taurasalecboyer 12-17-2005, 02:33 PM trying to change transmission fluid in 98 tauras. Cannot locate a drain. Can someone tell me where to find it? Willyum 12-17-2005, 02:38 PM Have to drop the whole pan to drain it. Take the pan off, clean it out good along with the washer magnet and replace the filter before refilling. (be careful - the fluid level is above the pan seam) alecboyer 12-18-2005, 08:01 AM Have to drop the whole pan to drain it. Willyum 12-18-2005, 01:39 PM It took me about 7 1/2 qts of Mercon V to refill after the clean out. Set the vehicle down flat on the floor when you refill, it will take the fluid faster and is unlikely to overflow. At the price of the fluid is an expensive waste. alecboyer 12-18-2005, 06:52 PM I put 8 quarts of mercon III in after the clean out. Only when I had it in did I realize I should have put Mercon V. Should I do it over again? Willyum 12-20-2005, 01:48 PM Alec, I don't know what the remedy is for what's happened. I've heard that there is an additive that can be added to help the situation but I would stick with the Mercon V. The cost of transaxle rebuild/replacement is a near fatal blow to older Taurus'. Should re-post the problem of the fluid mix and see what comes up. Might also post it at www.batauto.com where tech's hang out. alecboyer 12-20-2005, 04:26 PM I already changed it again with Mercon V. I have another vehicle that uses mercon III so I was just going to save the changed unused fluid for later use. Thanks for your advise. mwt878991 12-20-2005, 08:25 PM I use Mobil1 and a bottle of this in my 99 and 00 http://www.supermotors.org/getfile/270259/fullsize/lube%20guard.j pg http://www.getautohelp.com/automotive_products/ Mike :smokin: vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
