97 vortec engine gone bad?????

I've been having problems with my engine misfiring for the last year. I've taken it to three shops for them to figure out what is wrong. The first chevy place said all it was was the timing and they adjusted it. That did not fix it. The second chevy place said it was the injectors. Still haven't gotten that fixed because I was going to have them cleaned first to see if that worked. At the shop that was going to clean the injectors they said I need a new engine because coolant is leaking into two of the cylinders. Do I really need a new engine or can this be fixed?

It sounds like you need to work on finding a good repair shop.

Tip on going to the dealer
Ask that only a factory certified gasoline engine performance specialist work on your car.
Not all dealerships are concerned with how repairs are dispatched, and not all dealership techs bother to take advantage of the training offered by Ford (the vast majority of which is paid training). If the dealer is uncooperative, ask for your money back and call around for a dealer that will accommodate you.

Or if you are going to a general repair shop.

Check around Ask around
Word of mouth.
Family friends coworkers neighbors business people and delivery people.
Mailmen and parcel delivery people get around and notice a lot of stuff.
Even a good parts house knows what shops are good and not good.
Chamber of commerce and better business bureau and city hall.
If you find a good referral to a repair shop go look them over and talk to them.
Look for a clean looking busy place with nice people running it.
Ask a few questions and ask about their qualifications and training.
Not all places have trained tech/mechanics.
If they do not find a place that does.
Even all dealers do not have all trained techs/mechanics.

Re: 97 vortec engine gone bad?????

The first place was full of bull. Timming is not adjustable on a 97.
Any check engine lights?
Does it have any code no? Has it had a good tune up?
What engine and trans and mileage?

Well the first place said the adjusted the retard I think. But it has had the po300 code many times and just recently po305 and po306. So far I have replaced the spark plugs, wires, cap and rotor all with gm parts. I have the 5.7 vortec with 104,000 miles.

Re: 97 vortec engine gone bad?????

One thing to keep in mind is 5 and 6 are next to each other on firing order.
Is it a dead miss that you can feel going down the road?
Does the scanner show ramdom missfire or full missfire?
Also run fuel pressure check and compression check on it. Make sure fuel is up to specs hot running down the road.
A good engine capable scanner will check the injector balance.
If that last shop found coolant leaking into 2 cylinders you had better check into that.
Would it have been 5 and 6 cylinders?
