instrument lights

Instrument lights on my Impala 2002 LS don't work only at night??
During the day I can see the mileage readout, time and radio station number, but during the night all of the above is not visible.
Took it to the dealer they believe it's a faulty dimmer switch.
I did a test during the day I cover the light sensor (on top of the dashboard) and within seconds the lights turn off (mileage readout, time and radio station).
I think is a relay or something wrong with the light sensor ?
Can anyone help me?
dealer wants $450

Re: instrument lights

I had the exact same problem with my '01. I took it in to a car audio place because I thought it was the new chime module I hda to install along with a new stereo system, but it turns out something had shorted out inside the dimmer assembly and had visibly burned the switch. The part was around $140, and they charged me $50/hour for two hours of labor at Car Toys. You might want to check them out if you have one near you and you don't feel like selling your firstborn to the dealership. Good luck.

Re: instrument lights

I had the same problem with my impala. It actually wasn't that bad, but i twisted the headlight knob a little bit and it came on, i actuall had to do an eight of a turn from the highest setting to get them to come on. It didn't bother me and I just left it like that. But this had an effect at night. Not really pertinent to your problem but it might be the culprit, something to at least check.
