brake knock

2001 Ford Taurus - Recently replaced rear brake shoes, including hardware, turned drums and bled lines to rear brakes. Now I have a knock when braking. As I decellerate the frequency of the knock accellerates.

Looking for ideas.

Can you describe this statement better? It sounds like you're saying that as the brakes slow the car, the knocking becomes more rapid. Does the knocking stop when the car stops, or does it continue after coming to a complete stop? Can you describe the sound of the knock? Is it metallic sounding, or does it sounds like a relay clicking?

Have you noticed if your ABS light comes on at the same time?

Re: brake knock

No the ABS does not come on and yes it is a hard metalic knock and it stops when the vehicle stops.

Re: brake knock

Check the brake shoes to make sure nothing has come loose. Make sure the brake shoes are properly seated and adjusted.

I have had it apart three times... shoes are seated and everything is properly installed but it does sound like the shoes are slapping the drums.

Re: brake knock

Did you make sure the shorter pad is towards the front of the car and the longer pad towards the rear on both sides?

It's been a long time since I've done drum brakes, do they still use two different lengths of friction material?
