wont go into 4x4
I have a 1991 GMC Jimmy 4.3ltr automatic, the 4x4 worked about 3 months ago , then it was parked for a couple months and now the 4x4 doesnt work, the trnsfer case locks in, and i have vacuum to the thing(whatever its called) under the battery holder , but the front hubs will not lock in , if anyone has any idea what the problem is , that would be great.

Re: wont go into 4x4
If you have vacuum at the actuator, do you know if you have enough vacuum?
Also, maybe you will need to change the actuator itself.

Put the truck on stands, put it into gear. Throw it in to 4wd. Lean over and physically squeeze the vac actuator with your hand. If the front engages you still have a vac problem.

Re: wont go into 4x4
I have a 90 Jimmy - I had to "Jimmy" (haha) rig the 4x4 because my vaccuum actuator broke and I couldn't afford to get the new part. What I did was take the actuator out and pull the cable out to permanently engage the front even when its set to 2wd. When I was pulling the cable, I found that I could only pull it when both the truck and the 4x4 selector was set to neutral...

Re: wont go into 4x4
If you physically engage the cable while the truck is in gear (it will only move about 1/4" to actually go into 4wd) then you will most likely have to rebuild the front diff.

Re: wont go into 4x4
You mean the way I'm driving it now I'll have to rebuild the front diff or if I were to yank that cable so damn hard that I could actually get it to engage then I'd have to rebuild the front diff? I'd agree with you if you meant the former, but if not, I've been driving my truck this way pretty much since I've owned it with absolutely no problems..

Re: wont go into 4x4
I mean that if you pull on the cable and can't get it to engage, it will probably need to be rebuilt...
