THIS IS CRAZY! Power steering & radio stop intermittantly

Please please someone help, when I put the car in drive the radio stops working, if I change it to neutral or park, it goes on again. Now today while making turns my power steering cut in and out. The fluid is full, no noises, and no leaks. I can't pay someone to diagnose this 97 taurus GL if someone could help, please.

Check belt to see if it worn or slipping.

Is it a column shift by chance? I've seen something similar happen to a guy I know and he had to replace a module (this is what he told me) located in the steering column. He would loose radio, power steering and his oil light would come on.

YES, it is a column shifter, if you could find out what module it is that would be wonderful.

Sorry, I checked and no go on what was replaced. It could possibly be something that would be connected or close to the column shift and when the shifter is moved you end up with a bad connection.

Could it be the Transmission Range Switch causing this problem?

I agree with TomV. The TR sensor has wiring for about 7 or 8 different circuits that run through it. It is located on top of the transaxle below the master cylinder. It is easily replaced and fairly inexpensive. Just be surt the trans is in neutral and line up the little marks on the inside bushing and the one on the case of sensor.

I had this exact problem with my 97. Turns out my radio, power steering, and auto windows were affected.. It was the Transmission Relay sensor. On a side note, It will also cause your car to not start at all at some poiht. You'll probably find out that your camshaft positioning sensor is also going out. They seem to run together.

P.S.

I wouldn't have known any of this had it not happened to me

Re: THIS IS CRAZY! Power steering & radio stop intermittantly

Thanks to this site I replaced my Neutral Safety Switch (this seems to be the name the parts stores are looking for, same as TRS) in my '97 Sable tonight. My problem was the power steering and radio going out in reverse. This fixed this problem. I still have a problem with the radio dropping out once in a while but not nearly as much.

Hope to fix that next.
