Re: new head?

The valve cutouts in the pistons are in different locations sohc vs dohc. You may have problems in changing the heads because of valve to piston clearance. Also, the DOHC heads have more volume (cc's) in the head and your compression ratio will decrease if you don't change pistons too. You will need to use a Dohc intake and exhaust manifold. You may also have to change the computer because of the different torque curve produced by the Dohc setup. You could also consider installing a Sohc Magnum Head, that also comes with some expert level mods that you will need to do. Trade you neon for one with a Dohc in it, if you want a Dohc so bad.

Is there anything wrong with it? It will take some work to replace it with a DOHC as mentioned neon_rt and not worth the time and effort in my opinion. Better choice would be to replace your SOHC engine with a DOHC.

Replacing the sohc engine with a dohc engine is the cheaper way.You have a whole lot of work putting a dohc head on a sohc engine with lot of changes and would cost more than replacing the engine. You might have to use the computer and I have some bad news on Chrysler computers.Chrysler computers can be programed with the vin burned in once and the computer is done after that. The only choice on the computer if it does not work,a new one and and has to be programed and the vin burned in with Chrysler's factory scan tool,DRB III or a Vetronix scan tool. Those are the only scan tools that will program and burn in the vin on Chrysler computers.

Why would you have to do all that. Just get the DOHC from the same year as the engine and he would be fine. No need for reflashing or reprogramming. If he gets a 95 engine he would need a 95 PCM, 96 engine 96 pcm, 97-99 engine anyway pcm from 97-99 will do.

The 2.0 and 2.4 computer are probally differant some way, call an auto salvage yard on that.Like I mentioned,a Chrysler computer can not be reprogammed.A Chrysler computer can be programmed once and they are done after that

If you are swapping in a DOHC 2.4 engine from stratus then a 97-99 DOHC computer from a neon will work fine.

I heard that the only neons with that problem are SRT4s.
