Factory Bed Cover!

When I bought my truck (used with 8k on it) it had a soft bed cover on it, with the, (I'll call it) tongue and groove method of hooking it down, the hard plastic strip that slides into the groove on the metal frame. Has the three metal cross supports in it. It has the big Chevy bowtie impression on the back of it near the tailgate, so I'm going to assume that this was ordered WITH the truck and came from the factory? Does anyone know if this was a factory option?

Reason I ask is the other day I had to roll the cover up to transport a bench to my sister-in-laws house, by the time I went to put it back on, it was dark and about 25 degrees. Anyone that has or has had one knows at this temperature you can't stretch it back out and get it attached the whole way around. I got it as far as I could (all but to the back of it) and left the whole back piece across the tailgate loose, and on the ride home it was flapping. Well, the next morning I went out to see if I could get it on the rest of the way and about every 8 inches the black leathery vinyl stuff is split, peeling back, both corners are missing all the black and some of the stitching has started to come undone. LET ME TELL YOU HOW PISSED I WAS!!! I've let it flap before and nothing has happened, I think it was due to the cold temperatures that it became very brittle. Does anyone know if these covers come from the factory, and if so where I could look into getting a replacement piece for it other then having to go to the dealer? Is there a website? It rained today and water got in all the cracks and dripped into my bed. It looks like hell, and I'm not going to be happy until it's fixed!
Thanks!

Re: Factory Bed Cover!

I think you're probably screwed dude. I've got the soft cover too but I know from past experience never to leave it partially undone because of exactly what you described. I either take it all the way off or it's all the way on. I had one do almost the same thing yours did and I just got a new one. The manufacturer stated in the handbook not to leave it partially unsnapped and I figured taking it to a local shop that could do fabric repair was probably going to cost as much if not more than the original anyways, so for me---lesson learned. Not saying you can't get GM to take you up on this one, but good luck.

I have a 2005 Silverado and I learned my lesson with another truck I had and this time I purchased a cover by Berlin and the bar that goes across the back is spring loaded and when you attach the snaps on the rear you can push against the bar to take the tension off and shap it. The it returns to it's original position. It is impossible to snap those other covers in the cold weather. I purchased it on ebay.

While looking at the cover I saw the little tag that says GM Accessories on it, and went to their website, and found it... for $335.00 !!!!
I wonder how much it would cost if "someone" happened to slash my cover with a knife and me have to call the insurance company! lol
