Trunk release won't work

On our Grand Am 2003 the electric trunk release won't work from the remote or the button on the door. I checked the 20A fuse in the left fuse panel and its good but I still changed it with a new one. I see there is a relay there also but how do you check a relay, I also checked wiring back to the trunk latch and it is in good condition. Anybody run into this problem before. The door locks all work from the remote and the switches on the doors work.........

Re: Trunk release won't work

I'm thinking the problem may be the trunk release relay. Since the trunk will not open using the button on the door, that would elimate the remote and it's receiver as the door locks work from the remote..........just thinking out loud right now.....

Re: Trunk release won't work

Does the unit at the trunk make any noise when the remote is pushed? if not what you can do is try using a test light, Unplug the wiring at the trunk and use the test light probe in the power side of the wiring, there may be only one wire which would be the power side because the unit would then be grounding itself. make sure you have a good groung on the test light and then push the remote button or door button if the test light lights up then the trunk unit is bad. If it does not light up then you have a problem further up the wiring. It could be a simple ground out on the power wire (should have poped the fuse, but I have seen shorts that don't pop the fuse, they just create a problem), or you have problem with the remote unit. It sounds to me like a power problem (if not the trunk unit) because if the remote was bad the door button should still work.

I hope this helps.
