Unhappy 97 Pathfinder

I'm looking at a 97 Pathfinder; clean inside and out; solid underbody; runs great. Problem: Once in 4wd, it does not want to shift back to 2wd (or at least not without great effort). When trying to shift lever from 4H to 2H, it feels as though it is hitting something solid and absolutely refuses to go into 2H. Any ideas on this one? The present owner just says it's been acting funny like that for some time but is otherwise ok . . . Thanks in advance for the help.

Re: 97 Pathfinder

This may be a stupid question, but are you making sure that you are pushing down on the selector stick before trying to shift it between the various 2w/4w settings?? If you are, and it's still very tough to shift, I'm betting that it's transfer-case problems. In which case, let me know: I'm in sales for a wrecking-yard....and I might be able to hook you up with a great deal if you decide to get the vehicle. One note of caution: stay away from the automatics....we sell automatics for the pathfinders at about a 10 to 1 ratio when compared against the 5-speeds. Price for the automatic transmissions are crazy too. Just my 2 cents.

What is price diff of auto and standard? Auto is definitely not a requirement. Thanks for the help.

Re: Re: Re: 97 Pathfinder

Shifting between 2H and 4H and back you shouldn't be pushing down on the shift lever, that's only required when going from 4H to 4L and back.
