Unhappy 2000 Silverado clicking sound in steering wheel.

When I turned on my signal light (2000 Silverado), I heard a popping sound, smelled and saw smoke coming from the top of the steering column. Now the clicking sound comes on all on its own, even while the signal light is not activated. Everything seems to work normal anyway, other than when the noise starts. Please someone reply. Thank You.

clicking sound

If you hear what sounds like the turn signal is on, or blinking. and it is sporadic. it will click for a while and stop.
i had that same problem. first i replaced the flasher unit, it changed nothing. I started to check into it a little more and found I needed a new turnsignal switch. The inside of the switch was full of shavings, and causing the flasher unit to discharge through the the switch. you could possible clean out the switch and repack with dielectric greese. i chose to replace the hole switch. The switch was about 300 from dealer. If you have any connections you can get it for a little over 200. It was prittey easy to install. and took about an hour or so. That was on my 99 silverado 1500.

Re: clicking sound

I have the same problem with my 1998 Silverado. Due to the price of the switch, I've just let myself get used to the noise, which is very frequent these days. I was also assuming that one had to pull off the steering wheel and get at it through the steering column. Sounds like that is not the case, and it may actually be easier to fix? How did you do it? webbembry@gmail.com

Thanks!

Re: 2000 Silverado clicking sound in steering wheel.

you know if you know the part number and your planning on doing it yourself. go through www.gmpartsdirect.com

every part that I have seen there has been half the dealer cost.
