Sounds like the TCC solenoid, usually does this after warming up or driving for a while. I have not seen one fail as soon as started up, but, I do not know anything else that would do this. The TCC (torque converter solenoid) is a common item to fail and hard to replace due to where it is located. Only costs 20-25 bucks but would pay 150 to have it installed. To rule this out, unhook the 4 prong plug, sits under your airbox(have to remove the airbox assy.). Remove intake hose, filter box cover, filter, then remove the bolt holding air box on. You should be able to see the plug underneath. Unplug it and try it out. If you can drive normal without stalling this is it. Most people leave it unplugged, will only cause you to use a little more gas, but not much.

Re: chevrolet corsica 1989

I would definetly rule out the TCC at this moment... As stated by philjets7

the car was sitting overnight without being riden. The TCC would kick in after reaching 43MPH or higher (something like an overdrive) and then after coming down to a stop it won't dissengage causing the car to stall and it won't you allow to put it back in gear without stalling, even reverse.
I would start by checking the linkage for any binding, is the tranny making any whinning sounds while the engine is running either in gear or not?

Yes, Ed, thanks for pointing out my blunder. i read his post too fast, got to be more careful! If it backs up OK and won't go forward at all I would assume transmission is in need of repair or linkage problem.
