Just got turbo spoiler!! YEAH! But now I gotta paint :(AbsoluteGTR 11-15-2005, 08:42 PM Hey! I just got my turbo spoiler in the mail, looks pimp as hell. But now comes the paint..Can I just use regular black gloss spray paint and then a clear coat? How many coats would be necessary of the black gloss and of the clear coat? Also if someone could give me directions on how to install, that would be great..Ordered spoiler off ebay and I received some "plastic t-locator strips"..How do these work? THANKS! david-b 11-15-2005, 08:53 PM You need to primer it first. IDK how that spoiler attaches. When I did my TSi spoiler, it was pretty easy. Used chalk, and drew the outline on the car. Then drilled holes where they go. Use some good size bolts, and make sure it's snug. Make sure it doesnt leak. SilvrEclipse 11-15-2005, 08:59 PM If you use spray paint it might not match the car exactly. SmicAA72 11-15-2005, 09:00 PM If your removing the old 3piece spoiler, let it be known you will have to cover up an assload of holes from the old one. AbsoluteGTR 11-15-2005, 11:34 PM OhhI know I already remover the 3pc spoiler..I just spray painted the screws black temporarily! Also, the ebay auction s"tated" that the spoiler is already primered and ready to paint! But how should it look when primered? (The spoiler is very very smooth!) Also, The spoiler came with 4 holes for 4 bolts, is that enough? (two on each side) l_eclipse_l 11-15-2005, 11:39 PM I would say 3 layers stock paint, 2 layers clear coat to be safe. Yungstar007 11-16-2005, 12:17 AM AbsoluteGTR, did you win yours from Maxspeed Motorsports? I just got my turbo spoiler last week also: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=8009833928 That was the auction. Extremely fast shipping. Now I gotta paint also, will probably do next week. ez1286 11-16-2005, 12:33 AM Just a suggestion, buy new primer, do a light sanding with 400-grit, clean it with acetone (or similar), then prime with the same brand of paint, you can get "exact" matches from duplicolor. make sure the surface is VERY smooth before you paint you might want to wet sand with like 1500+. The better it looks/feels before painting the better it will look when done. AbsoluteGTR 11-16-2005, 12:43 PM Ohh Ok! Its got to be smooth! Good the spoiler is already extremely smooth! Also if someone could tell me what those plastic t-locator strips are for and how they are used! Also, if someone wouldn't mind posting soem pics of their turbo spoiler so I know exactly how to mount and where to place! THANKS! 91 Eclipse 11-16-2005, 05:33 PM in my area i can take it to MATC an they will paint it for free alls i have to do is pay for materials. so if you have something like this in your area you could check it out 97GSTspyder 11-16-2005, 06:03 PM i wouldn't sand/wet sand it with anything above 800 before painting. if it's too smooth or shines, the paint will not stick. i'd say clean the hell out of it, prime it, sand the primer with like 400-600 grit. clean off the surface the best you can. then 3 coats of color, 3 coats of clear. the first coat of clear you won't be happy with since the color coats eat up the clear, this is why you need more than 1 coat. let it dry for a while (AT LEAST a day), then if you see any orange peel, etc then wetsand with 1500-2500. be careful around edges, because paint is weakest around edges. then buff/polish... ALSO, make sure not to paint outside. especially if there's a lot of moisture and/or if it's too cold. AbsoluteGTR 11-16-2005, 08:55 PM Alright everyone, well i already gave it 3 coats of black paint..tommorrow I shall give it 2 clears! :iceslolan But when it comse time to install, what will those plastic t-locator strips do? (Does ANYONE know what I am talking about lol??) :screwy: Also the whole paint job on the car is semi/almost dull..so...in a couple months I might get a paintjob for it (black of course). If I was to go to Maaco, how much would it be for a decent and cheap paintjob that shines like from the factory?? (I dont want anything to expensive)! :naughty: THANKS! Yungstar007 11-17-2005, 12:26 AM I believe the locator t-strips are to assist you in lining up the spoiler before drilling. AbsoluteGTR 11-17-2005, 09:34 AM I believe the locator t-strips are to assist you in lining up the spoiler before drilling. Thanks..I figured that much out! lol But how do I know where to place them?? THANKS! -Josh- 11-17-2005, 09:49 AM Alright everyone, well i already gave it 3 coats of black paint..tommorrow I shall give it 2 clears! :iceslolan But when it comse time to install, what will those plastic t-locator strips do? Just remember, when you get a Maaco paint job you GET what you PAY for. Those guys have been known to paint cars for $200, only problem is, you get a $200 paint job... This is why it's good to have a friend who will paint your car for you  Wonder how the Spyder would look with that spoiler.... nova1313 11-17-2005, 03:21 PM the spyder looks amazing with the spoiler. I've recently done it to mine but have not taken pictures yet. I also painted mine black with spray and glossed. It came out well. In spring I'm taking it to a maaco for a color change on the car and some body work (removal of dings and dents) I didn't use the t strips ( I couldn't figure them out either) . I simply lined it up with a ruler and a pencil. An estimate for maaco for the best paint job they have + a sand before hand and to fix a messed up front left rim above the wheel well, fix chips in front bumper, and change the color to Nissan 350z blue was around 2k if I removed all the headlights, mirrors, trim, spoiler, tail lights, door locks, door handles. I didn't remember to ask them what they planned to do with the trim that goes for the convertible top because I'm scared to remove that myself. But it looks great. you will be very happy with the results when you are done. My next venture is the dual muffler dual tip on each exhaust. But I can't decide if i should save and turbo it before hand or wait on the turbo. I had most of the parts sitting here... anyway now that I'm off topic good luck with the spoiler just remember plug the holes asap! They rust fast otherwise! AbsoluteGTR 11-17-2005, 10:07 PM Thanks ya'll for all of the help! Can anyone tell me how far back to position the spoiler? Because if I remeber correctly, The tip of the spoiler does not go over the edge of teh hatchback, correct? THANKS! clipsekid99 11-17-2005, 11:53 PM http://www.clipsekid99.com/exterior/ext11.jpg It almost lines up to the edge of the hatch. SmicAA72 11-18-2005, 02:19 AM Don't Maaco Paint jobs like feel off after a year or two. I've heard NEVER GO TO maaco from ALOT of people. AbsoluteGTR 11-18-2005, 09:07 AM Hey Thanks clipsekid for the pic, thats what I needed. Thats what I noticed on cars around town...It just beets the line ofteh hatch, but not quite! THANKS! Hey SmicAA72, Im assuming "feel" was "peel" LOL. Whats wrong with Maaco? I dont think if it is just Maaco, it all depends on what person and how they painted your car! AbsoluteGTR 11-18-2005, 03:09 PM WOOOOOO HOOOOOO!! After like 3-4 hours I finally finished installing it! All I had to do was drill 4 holes, but they were a bit off, so...I had to tug and pull to expand the holes...and now all is good. It looks so sick! Now, I just gotta go to Maaco so they can patch up the holes, and to talk prices about repainting the whole car, plus some other scrapes and whatnot to the car! ***All I need now is some gs/gst/gsx side skirts!*** clipsekid99 11-18-2005, 04:52 PM Hey Thanks clipsekid for the pic, thats what I needed. No prob man, can't wait to see how it turned out! nova1313 01-10-2006, 04:09 PM how far from the back in inches did you mount it? I have to put mine on soon. I got a quote from maaco for 1700 if I remove taillights, spoiler, all rubber trim, mirrors, front license plate frame. Thats their premium prep work, laying a paint with a 5 year warantee, and a clear coat over that. Also includes fixing my wrinkled front fender (gonna see if I can get one from the junk yard first instead), and taking out dings and dents and smoothing chips in the hood. It didn't sound to bad.. AbsoluteGTR 01-10-2006, 08:47 PM The spoiler is literally maybe 1/2 inch from the edge of the hatch...DO not let the edge of the spoiler hang off the edge of the hatch...(Some eclipse did that in a neighboring town, and it looks like shit) $1700 is not that bad, but then again it is Msaco...try to brig the price down to $1500, or try and find a independent body shop. GL nova1313 01-11-2006, 01:15 AM okay great thanks. I won't let it hang off the back or line it up right to the back thats yag. I have the spyder so I have to see how limited I am on space when it shows up. Automotive Network, Inc., Copyright ©2012
