What makes the tranny oil pump go out o a 97 escort/tracer on a regular basis ?

Lost one at 55K, replaced it. Lost another now at 66K. Being replaced as I type. Maybe something else is lurking ? Any experiences/ideas ? Anyone wanna get a real good deal on low mileage used tracer wagon in great condition otherwise ?
