Re: best exhaust for f body

glass packs suck in my opion, plus he needs wider diameter ehxuats to make some power. i say get your self a flowmaster catback exhaust. well worth it and when used with an aftermarket Y pipe that will be all the loud you will want.

I didn't know they made a GTA Trans Am in 1986. I thought they came out in '87. (Gran Turismo Americana)

As for "glass packs"- they rob horsepower. Research how mufflers work and I think there are 2 main ways they generally work. 1 is sound absorbtion. the other is with the sound waves/ cancellation, etc..

the glass packs are literally that- filled with fiberglass packing to absorb the sound. this is not good for exhaust flow. the packing hinders the exhaust flow.

companies like flowmaster, etc spend thousands of dollars and hours of R&D to manipulate the sound waves while maintianing decent flow.

take advantage of their engineering and buy a muffler that is designed for high flow and sound control (they make loud and quiet versions. talk to a sales rep for exactly what you want) . I had a set of hooker mufflers (with headers and straight pipe on my '68 firebird) that I could literally see straight through . they were loud. I loved it!

exhaust is more than just back pressure, btw. there is a science to it. tube diameter, the "scavenging" effect, and overall design of the exhaust tubing/ layout all play a critical factor in having the optimal setup for minimal power loss.

Re: best exhaust for f body

they did make the GTA in 86, i know cause my cousin had one. and i have tons of information on what yrs put out what power. check out third gen.org.. in 86 the GTA had 225hp i believe and like 330ftlbstq. trust me on this one. in fact third gens didn't make 245 until the 90's.

http://www.thirdgen.org/newdesign/tech/techdb.shtml

Correction, from what that site says they started making GTA's in 87. my cousins car musta been an 87 then cause i know it was a GTA, but anyhow in 87, when they seem to have began making them, they made 225 hp at the crank and 330 for torque. In 88 which is what drivetrain you have they made 230 and 330. that sites cool too it tell all the differences along the yrs. 1990 is the first time the F-body has 245 with the l98.
