you might want to specify that the rally you're doing is a road rally. I would mainly just focus on having a good navigator and stopwatch for a roadrally.
For rallycross you usually don't need to worry about having a skidplate as the course needs to be able to be traversed by showroom stock cars. The one mod for rallycross I recommend are good rally tires mounted to the smallest rims you can fit over your brakes. Falken sells some pretty good rally tires for reasonable prices, you have to special order them from most places though.
