Engine Knocking help please.

Ok my engine or something is knocking I dont know witch. It will knock at idle and it will knock faster as I drive and it rev's up. Its really loud. I took valve cover off and it sounded like it went with cylinder 3. But as i drive and it rev's higher and i push clutch in it will go faster for a second. Like when you normally dirve and push the clutch in it will rev up a little. Well it gets louder with that to. Any help with what to do would be great. New engine or what? I have not drove it much at all since it has done it. Just started to do it when i started it one morninn Thanks for any help I get.

Re: Engine Knocking help please.

Is it a knock or a tick? I know the lifters will tick and increase as you speed up. A little engine knock is common on some of the older neons. Some people live with it, others drop a new engine in it. It all depends on what you wanna do and how much you wanna spend.

Yeah its knocking loud. And I dont know if i should just live with it. Its a 95 sohc. What would it most likely be. A piston or a valve? The filter is not loose it was at first a little then it fucked up like it is now. I want to replace it I think how easy would it be to put like a 96-99 sohc engine in it?

Re: Engine Knocking help please.

I think some of the folks here will attest to this one....You might check you spark plugs.. if one is loose the engine makes a popping/knocking noise. I know you said that your valve cover was off, which implies you know the right end of a wrench, but i had a loose plug and it made get that sinking feeling in my gut.

An engine speed dependent knock is bad. connecting rod bearing.....

If you get a 96-99 engine make sure you get all the sensors that come with them. The 95 and 96 years have different sensors and/or locations for them. The 97-99 years are identical.

Re: Engine Knocking help please.

Ok thank you very much with the whole 97-99 being the same. That will help a lot in getting the engine i need. I also thank you guy that said to check the plugs i will do that but they are tight for sure from last time i messed with it. I will check agian anyways and then I will get the engine thanks to you guys and anyone else that might have something to add.

Re: Re: Engine Knocking help please.

The one true way to know if you have engine knock would be to drop yiur oil pan and take a look at your rods. You may be experiencing pinging, which is different from a knock.

Re: Engine Knocking help please.

Yeah it has oil just enough when it first happened and now it has way to much but have not ran it since i put a ton of oil in it. Have not tryed to take the oil pan off but ill try that i guess. I dont know the diff between a ping and a knock. The ping sounds better to have.

mY 99' Ran REALLY bad and made sounds last year. It was the plug wires. And I had changed them just 2 years before.
