Police searching for car involved in deadly street race

11:31 AM MST on Wednesday, October 26, 2005

3TV and azfamily.com Staff

Police are searching for a car that was involved in a street-racing accident that killed a 20-year-old.

3TV
The driver of this car lost control, served into the median and hit a pole, police said.
It happened last night neat Gilbert Road and Civic Center Drive.

According to investigators, a blue Acura and another car were racing when the driver of the Acura apparently lost control, swerved into the median and slammed into a light pole.

The driver of the Acura, Chad Bivens, was airlifted to the hospital where he later died.

The driver of the second car took off.

This morning, police are asking for the public's help to find that car.

"We're looking for witness information [from anyone] that was in the area at the time the vehicles were racing," Sgt. Scott Girardin of the Gilbert Police Department.

Police said they don't have much in the way of a vehicle description and would like to hear from anybody who might have seen the race of the subsequent wreck.

Investigators believe the cars were racing on Gilbert Road between Ray and Warner roads.

For those who have seen problemhatch post, this was his wifes old car. This was also the car the civracer was looking to purchase.

What was it doing in Arizona?

I'm assuming somebody bought it from them in Utah and it ended up in AZ?

I'm confused...

That sucks. Seeing a car that you've put a lot of money, sweat and blood into end up in a wreck like that must break your heart. My guess is that they're never going to find the other driver.

I saw that in the news, and let me say this:

NEVER, EVER, TAKE YOUR CAR, OR YOURSELF, BEYOND EITHER'S LIMITS - ESPECIALLY ON A PUBLIC ROAD.

Now, we'll have more lawmakers saying: "See? We need more laws..." etc etc...

...even though this type of news surfaces about once/twice every year in AZ, while we have accidents invoving a death, with no hint of racing involved (sadly) almost every other day.

It was sold to the kid in AZ.

wow kinda scary, one of our members drove that car at one point in time, could have been driving it right now.

stupid kid, there is no way he had a good feel of that car to be street racing, it had to have been sold to him like less than a month ago.

So if they do find the other driver would he be charged with something other than street racing. I'm sure there is probably a law that says something to the effect of "accidental, non-impact, induced vehicular homicide"... It's a shame the kid died. He obviously didn't know what he was doing. There may have actually been foul play. Who knows? The media doesn't have all the facts and the public will never know all the facts... I watch too much CSI...

Yeah, I'm with Kris. Once sold, you sign and send in the release of liability form. Once that's done, you're free and clear.

Damn. That's not good at all. I hadn't even heard about this one untill this post was made and this happened just a few miles from where I live.

One thing I don't get is, unless the other dude hit the Acura and caused it to crash, how the hell does one lose control of a fwd vehicle in a strait line? Damn, these kids need to chill out and learn to drive before doing this stuff.

There is more to the story, than what is being reported in the news.

I know for one, he upset a few people with how fast his car was. I dont think this was a classic drag race.

Think there was some foul play involved?

This seems to happen once a year, somebody has a fast car. The 'locals' get upset and some poor guy gets ran off the road in some racing road rage.

Even with all the paper work transfered, he can still be sued. We had a friend of our family sell their house, and they had a diving board. The people who bought the house had a real party happy daughter. She threw a party, and some drunk ass jumped off the diving board, knocked his head of the concrette, and cracked his skull. The friends that sold the house ended up getting sued. They won, but it lasted almost a year and a half for the suit, and cost a shit ton of money. I'd do it just to be safe, because in our sue happy society, you cant be to safe.

I have been in close touch w/ chads mother. Damn guys this sucks really bad. I can't go into detail, but there was foul play and a history of involvement w/ the other vehicle. I sold it to him September 28th 2005. What sucks more is we kept in touch and became pretty good friends and i had plans to see him when i go race Nopi in Pheonix next March.

To clear things up on how it ended up in Arizona, Civracer95 mentioned i was selling it to someone in Maryland, But he backed out, And Chad was begging me for weeks so chad got the first dibs after the other guy backed out, Chad flew out shortly after and i picked him up at the airport and he spent the afternoon giving him all the tips and etc. about the car. My wife even took pictures of Chad when he was leaving, very sad i'll tell you guys. I'll email Kris some pictures so he can post it up.

That's just aweful that someone would take a life over being beat by a car. What kind of bs is that anyway...

This is yet another example of why I have my rifle in my car at all times, people are insane.(Although I doubt it woulda helped this poor guy much) Very sad.

It's a Keltec .40 cal. Made of the same plastic my .40 cal Glock 22 is made of. It also uses the same exact clips from my Glock. It's got a 16.5 inch barrel and folds in half so it's total folded length is about 17 inches. It's very small for a rifle, but still considered a rifle. Makes for a very stable firing platform with minimal kick. It'll wing a .40 cal 300 yards very accurately.

The glock stays under my bed because it'll never be needed for more than 10 yards.

So I'm not THAT crazy either ;)

As for people from other countries thinking us Americans are nuts for carrying around guns, I can understand your point of view. But in the world we live in today it's almost a must. If it comes down to me losing my life, or having to take the life of some lunitic, I'm going to stay alive if I can help it, along with doing the world a favor by ridding it of some jackass.

But are you ever scared that there may be one time where you're in the heat of an argument and you kill a guy and go to jail for murder? It only takes one mistake to fuck up your own life.

I just feel that carrying guns in a civilised society is unnecessary. Just my .02

BullDog71ss

To answer your question...No, I'd never kill someone over an argument. My gun is for protecting my life and recreational use(shooting paper targets and various other inanimate objects in a safe manner and hunting) and nothing else.

If we lived in a civilized world then of course I wouldn't need it for protection(however, I'd still have them for recreation), the problem is, we don't live in a civilized world. Our world is full of nutjobs. I will not fall victim to them if I can help it.

I agree with you entirely, and I don't think any sane person would kill someone over an argument.

However, I'm talking about in the HEAT of it.

For example, some psycho is screaming at you and you think he's gonna do some serious bodily harm so you have your gun out to show you're serious that he needs to back off.

What if in such a situation something spooks you and you pull the trigger and kill him. Doesn't that scare you?

I'm not saying these situations are common, but doesn't that possibility scare you?

Heh. I know exactly what you are talking about.

This is what I used to carry for personal protection, when I worked as an Officer for the state: http://www.kel-tec.com/prod01.htm - besides the service Glock 19 we carried on duty.

I also had the Law Enforcement only 15-round mag :).

Here's what I carry now: http://www.brooksidepress.org/Products/OperationalMedicine/DATA/operationalmed/Safety/Weapons/M1911145CaliberAutomaticPistol.htm

Although mine's a clone, and a bit newer, and more accurate than the old military-issue ones.

No, I'm not scared at all of something like that. I'd never have my gun out unless there was an immediate threat to my life.

I've been in plenty of nasty argurements and near fights with idiots at my buddies' partys before. Never once have I felt the need to get my gun to settle a score. That's not what it's there for. If I do get it out some time in my life, someone is going to get shot, and it will be in self defense over my life or one of my family member's lives. There's just no other reason to use it.

It's called self control and good judgement and I've been brought up with both.

I like the chunky 1911 models. The best part is that they're so heavy, even if they don't fire you can just hit them over the head with it and do just as much damage. :naughty:
My buddies dad has a Dan Wesson 1911, very nice gun and fun as hell to shoot. Although, his Beowolf makes even the 1911 and the 44. mag Super Red Hawk seem dinky.

If you follow proper trigger discipline, you should have zero worries about accidently shooting anyone, namely

A) Always treat a weapon as if its loaded
B) Never point the weapon at anything you have no intention of killing
C) Keep your finger off the trigger until you are ready to shoot.

You follow those three rules (among others) your good to go. 'Course, I've been shooting handguns since I was a youngin, my dad's got himself a nice set up.

Well, just trying to keep up on things. Man this is completely awful. That was one amazing car. And he was a very lucky kid to own it. I know I would have been just as happy as he looked if I had owned that car. Poor guy. Steve, glad things were cleared up here. When I heard that guy from AZ bought it, I was a little miffed because I thought the Maryland dudes got it. Was wondering what the hell was going on. But, who knows, that could have been me if I would have had that car in my possession. Well, rest in peace Chad. I know he was a happy kid with that car. Too bad it had to end with foul play.
