1999 4runner starter problemswk121 11-01-2005, 09:42 PM I have a 4cyl 2.7 with 95,000miles last week it wouldnt start. no noise no nothing. Battery is good all power is working. I had it towed and the mechanic said it needs a new starter. Okay put new (rebuild) starter in. everything is good for one week. Tonight go to start the thing and nothing again. Any ideas? I find it hard to believe that the starter is the problem now. Brian R. 11-01-2005, 11:38 PM Check the starter relay. One opposing pair of contacts should show continuity. The other pair should not. If you apply battery voltage to the pair with continuity, then the other pair should then show continuity until the voltage is removed. Could still be the starter. Wouldn't be the first time a bad starter was sold as rebuilt. If the starter is the problem, it is probably the solenoid contacts that need to be replaced. http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=166530 swk121 11-02-2005, 10:27 AM Got the truck towed back to the machanic last night. He called me this morning and said it started right up first try. I will ask him to chech the starter relay. Thanks swk121 11-02-2005, 10:45 AM Just found out that when the starter was hot it wouldnt start. Getting new (Rebuild) starter put in now. Hoplfully this will be the end of it. Brian R. 11-02-2005, 06:57 PM FYI - Replacing the contacts usually solves a no-starting problem when the starter is hot. The contacts work better when cold. If the brake and charge lights come on during revving of the engine then it's a sign that the carbon alternator brushes require replacing as this is the mileage for them to wear out. In alternators the brushes wear out on average every 140-170 000 miles where on the dashboard the brake & charge light both come on at the same time. About half of the auto electric shops in your local yellow pages sell carbon alternator brushes and copper solenoid starter contacts for about $5/pair.Another way to verify that the alternator is not charging is while the engine is running bring a metal screwdriver or any metal object near the alternator and if the alternator is working properly then it should act like a magnet and grab the screwdriver.
