speaker amp
I have a 97 gp gt with 70k miles, i have the eight speaker system, but i don't think it's bose, at least it doesn't say bose anywhere, and it doesn't say monsoon anywhere but it does have the 7 band eq that is typical of the monsoon setup, anyway, my rear 6 by 9's aren't receiving power and i had it tested and the guy said it was the amp that needed replaced. any ideas on where the amp is and where i can find one?

Re: speaker amp
Give me the last 8 digits of your VIN number and I can tell you for sure if your car has the low-frequency external amp. Are you sure the rear speakers are getting no power, or do they intermittently work/not work? I had a similar problem with my 99, and it ended up being the rear speakers were faulty. I replaced them with some Pioneer 6x9's, using a $6 harness adaptor from Best Buy so I didn't have to cut my factory wiring.

vf344149 are the last 8 digits of my vin, my fiancee works at circuit city so i had one of their road shop guys (who owns a gtp) check my speakers, he took the existing wiring to one of my 6x9's and hooked the wire up to a 6x9 he had in the shop he knew worked, and still no power, yes the problem is intermittent, but they usually do not work, occassionally after listening to the radio or a cd for awhile they'll kick on and stay on til i turn the stereo off. i just want to get all eight speakers working and it's a pain in the butt to modify this system because of all the adapters i need to get the steering wheel controls to work, and also if i replace the head unit i would lose my 12 disc in the trunk.

Re: speaker amp
Your car does have the external amp, it should be in the dash behind and slightly above the radio. The GM part number is 16201332, but they are expensive. The Service ID code for the 8 speaker sound system with the external amp is UQ3 (found on the SPID label on the underside of the trunk), if you want to go boneyarding and know what to look for [the factory part is WAY espensive ($240)]

Re: speaker amp
Ask the seller what the part number is on the one he's selling, and post it here, I'll let you know.

I had the same problem with my GT, although it only had the 6 speaker setup. My 6x9's would only work on occasion, and one was blown as it was. I just replaced them with some Pioneer 6x9's today and those are working like a charm. It may have just been a loose connection that would work on occasion, or it may have just been a problem with the speaker. Either way, simply replacing the speakers has solved the problem for me (not to mention I definitly have more bass now )
Oh, and I also have a head unit with the 7 band equalizer. I had the dealership replace the old one (with the basic equalizer) because the clock wouldnt work right. Didn't ask for it, just the one they happened to get. The clock still doesn't work quite right, but hey, now I have a better head unit at least.

as far as I know, there was never a monsoon system offered for the Grand Prix, at least 97-03 models. If you have a 8 speaker system, I'd assume you have the Bose system, but I could be wrong.

Re: speaker amp
The amp he is selling is for an 02-03 model, and I don't believe it will fit your car.

did they release a different external amp for every year of grand prix, and is the part number you gave me the only one that will work in my car?

Re: speaker amp
According to the GM computer, 97, 98 and 99 are all different, and 00-01 are the same, and it doens't say if any are interchangeable. Normally , if a new number will work for an older number, GM will note the old number as being superceded. I know the 97 and 98 Keyless entry/security system is different and not interchangeable with the 99-up's, so it's entirely possible that the same is true with the external amps.
