Timing OFF?

I just replaced the timing belt on my 2.O and it is making a knocking noise when it is accelorating and decelorating but only when it is in gear and driving on the road.

The Check engine light came on also.

How do I check/adjust the timing and is this the cause of the noise as well as the check engine light?

Any way to find out the source of the check engine light with out a computer to plug it in to?

Thanks.

Update:

I just talked to a professional and he said I probably did not tighten the engine mount enough which is the cause of the klunk when i hit the gas and when i take my foot off. This would also explain why the engine sounds great when in neutral and i rev the engine.

As far as the check engine light i think that there is a leak in my air intake somewhere but i am not sure where. I can hear a sucking noise that was not there before i did this work. I checked the hoses- i just need a little more time to examine it a bit more.

can anyone else add anything?

I would still like to have a way to check my timing so I know for sure i am not going to damage anything.

Thanks

If your timing is off the engine would not be running. The valves would be bent pretty good

HELP!!!!

I just did a more extensive road test and I found that I have a lot less power on the road. Also there is a loud rattle coming from my engine. Also the check engine light is not only on but it is flashing also.

PLEASE, can someone tell me how I can perform a base timing procedure on my jetta? it is a 2.0 2000. My book has no info on timing at all, just tells me to get it at TDC when I change the belt.

HELP!!!, PLEASE!!! I have no car and I need it to work as soon as possible.

Thanks

Also, while I am asking what sprocket do i use to do the adjustment for the base timing procedure with the belt? The camshaft or crankshaft? I am guessing the crankshaft.

Thanks a lot and I really appreciate any help. This thing is killing me.

For anyone with a similar problem the only marks you have to line up are the crank shaft pully (also called the flywheel or the damper) with the bottom timing belt cover and the camshaft sprocket with the top rear timing belt cover.

Also make sure the tensioner is set perfectly and tightened hard.

Good luck to you all .... JZ
