540iTA "Performance gearing and torque converter"?

What's up with the altered gearing on the 2002 540iTA? It has a 3.15 final drive instead of a 2.81 (which the sedan has).

What is changed in the torque converter?

Why would they do this? Surely the sedan gearing is quick enough? It dumps the gas mileage in to the toilet enough to make the gas tax in Canada go from $75 on the sedan to $1,200 on the wagon!!!!

If anyone can exlpain the logic or technical details of this, I would appreciate it.

Could it be changed? Is it really just the rear-end gear?

Thanks,

Marc
